Over the past few decades, the notion of World Englishes has achieved much attention among linguists, language teachers, and other professionals. The present study explores the impact these trends have had on university education in the field of English philology and culture, focusing on the study programmes run by the Applied Languages Faculty, the University of Economics in Bratislava, Slovakia. Our research was designed to gain insights into the students’ perception of varieties of English and identify those areas which require more attention in order to provide students with the most relevant content. The research sample contained 130 students of one BA and one MA programme. Our research was based on a questionnaire which provided us with the data on students’ awareness of the studied issues. The paper focuses on the press-conferences of the US President Joe Biden and the Russian Federation President Vladimir Putin which took place in conclusion of the summit of the two presidents in Geneva, Switzerland on June 16, 2021. Employing the methods of textual,
discursive, and comparative analyses, it explores the ways in which both presidents construe their representations of the summit as well as representations of themselves. The analysis also pays attention to the communication strategies selected by Putin and Biden, aimed at eliciting specific desired effects.

The paper intends to explore in detail the discourses of the first official responses of the US President Joe Biden and the UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson to the outbreak of the Russian full-scale military invasion in Ukraine on February 24, 2022. It employs comparative critical discourse analysis, with elements of textual analysis, and combines it with both quantitative and qualitative research approaches. The analysis examines the crucial discourse parameters and compares their concepts in the speeches of the two politicians. Our hypotheses are following: 1/ the attitudes of the politicians will derive from the principles of humanism and democracy, i.e., they will condemn the Russian aggression and support the defence of Ukraine; 2/ the assumed differences between the politicians’ narratives will be related to the different political and economic positions of the US and the UK in the global context, i.e. the attitude of the US as a global leader will be more vehement and strict.

This paper aims to explain how the Slovak public perceived migrants coming to Slovakia from Ukraine after the outbreak of the war. Like other countries neighbouring Ukraine, Slovak state institutions have had to deal with issues related to the migration of Ukrainian refugees. In addition to spontaneous aid, negative attitudes towards refugees have also appeared in the public debate since the beginning of the war. Using the method of discourse analysis, this paper examines the formation of opinions on Ukrainian refugees in Slovakia since February 24, 2022. This paper confirms that, as in 2015 and 2016, during the debate on the migration situation, opinions about refugees as a potential threat to the domestic population continued to emerge. These negative messages were mainly presented by representatives of the far right and far left, who are usually characterised by a positive attitude towards Russia and a negative attitude towards the US.4

On 26 May 2023, the author delivered a talk on
‘India-China War of 1962’ during the Conference
on ‘Nationalism, War and Defeat’ held at the
University of Copenhagen. This article, an expansion
of the above talk, is an outcome of the research
carried out by the author jointly with Dr Beáta
Biliková, Assistant Professor at the Faculty of
Applied Languages, University of Economics in
Bratislava. Dr Biliková with her expertise on applied
linguistics, textual and critical discourse analysis,
has covered how the American and the British media
represented and reflected upon the war and
highlighted some evaluative representations that
tried to influence readers to adopt a specific bias
towards the conflict. The 1962 India-China war is a
significant event in Indian history, marking its only
modern military defeat. Despite the importance of
this conflict, key figures like Defence Minister VK
Krishna Menon and military personnel did not leave
behind memoirs. This article delves into Indian
writings on the war and examines how Western
media, particularly in the United States (US) and
United Kingdom (UK), portrayed the conflict. Indian
perspectives, ranging from military officers to
historians, offer diverse insights into the war’s causes and consequences, while Western media
framed it within the broader context of the Cold
War, emphasising ideological tensions and strategic
interests. The US press focused on strategic gains,
while the UK press highlighted moral and historical
dimensions, reflecting complex narratives of politics,
ideology, and colonial legacies. Overall, both Indian
and Western perspectives underscored the war’s
long-term implications for Asian security.
