The point of view of Greek and Roman historians from imperial times is generally favourable to R... more The point of view of Greek and Roman historians from imperial times is generally favourable to Roman imperialism. But more critical views can also be found, through the idealization of the barbarians or through the “ voices” of the enemies of Rome. These “ anti-Roman voices” have greatly influenced modern historiography for the idealization of native peoples and the rejection of a conquering and cruel Rome. This happened also in the Basque Country in the nineteenth century, when historiographical and literary works readapted the ancient discourse to the new political interests and debates.

A lo largo del trabajo, se utilizan términos tales como t'constitución", "asamblea popular", "decreto senatorial", etc. Somos conscientes de que no tenían ningún valor técnico en época republicana, y su uso hoy responde a una convención aceptada (c/. Roldán, "Orden constitucional romano", 67-'i.00; Hesky, "Decretum", RE |V .2, 2294-5). El criterio seguido para la mención de los nombres propios antiguos latinos y griegos ha sido la castellanización de todos ellos. A lo largo del trabajo nos referimos al Senatus consultum ultimum con el término SCU, adoptado de la bibliografía especializada. Las abreviaturas utilizadas son las de L'Année Philologique. Los títulos de libros o artículos mencionados con frecuencia se citan mediante abreviaturas, que se indican en Ia bibliografía general entre paréntesis.

The paper offers a series of ideas for an analysis of political violence, from the tribunate of T... more The paper offers a series of ideas for an analysis of political violence, from the tribunate of Tiberius Gracchus in 133 BC to the end of the Julio-Claudian dynasty and the approval of the lex de imperio Vespasiani (AD 68 ). The proposal aims to analyse the presence of political violence, to observe possible continuities in the use of certain procedures (crimen maiestatis, hostis publicus' declaration) and to outline the differences throughout the whole period of time considered. Political violence is seen as always having a contextual explanation, directly linked with times of especially strong political and socioeconomic conflicts and with the defense of alternative political projects.

Mommsen from the Aguilar publishing house in the 1960s. At a time when this type of work was unknown in Spanish universities, and when Ancient History was practically taking its first steps as a specific university discipline in Spain, Professor Carreras offered an introductory study that still today constitutes a brilliant tool to locate the German historian in his historical and historiographical context and to facilitate the reading of his History of Rome.

This paper deals with wealth (or its absence) as an explicit topic in the political propaganda in... more This paper deals with wealth (or its absence) as an explicit topic in the political propaganda in the Late Roman Republic, and how the conflict between the rich and the poor leads to violent conflicts in the city of Rome. Violence in this period is, therefore, analysed, on the one hand, as a problem directly linked with the growing richness of the aristocracy and, on the other hand, with the socioeconomic difficulties of important sectors of the plebs.

En el texto se retoma la tesis de aquel articulo, centrado en la relacion entre los "populares" y la violencia politica, y se analiza la evolucion historiografica sobre el tema en estas tres decadas. Esta evolucion esta marcada por la influencia de la historia social, una nueva interpretacion del conflicto politico tardorrepublicano y una lectura critica del testimonio ciceroniano. De resultas de esta evolucion la violencia se analiza como resultado de un contexto socioeconomico crecientemente desigual y de una estrategia politica por parte de los "optimates" totalmente opuesta a las propuestas reformistas de los "populares". The paper presents a research held by an international team on the role Ancient Greece and Rome p... more The paper presents a research held by an international team on the role Ancient Greece and Rome played in some national historiographies and cultures in the 18 and 19th centuries. This project combines a properly historiographical approach with the study of the interest in Greece and Rome as a source for cultural and political models. A brief analysis of two specific cases, the (failed) project of a National History of the Basque provinces by the Basque Enlightenment and Ancient History in the Catalan historiography of the XIXth century would illustrate the problems and difficulties which this "work in progress” has to deal with. As a result, it is possible to see the evolution of patriotism, the rise of nationalism and the development of alternative historiographies in Spain and other western countries and how Antiquity is used to support different political and cultural positions.

Junto a los aspectos politicos y sociales mas tratados, distintos autores antiguos (poetas, biografos, anticuarios), nuevos acercamientos a la ciudad de Roma (con la taberna como elemento central de la sociabilidad plebeya) y diferentes temas (el ocio, la oralidad, la cultura y religiosidad populares) contribuyen a un conocimiento mas completo de una realidad compleja y heterogenea.

C., 4, 13), los ciudadanos incluidos en las listas de las proscripciones suplicaban a sus esclavos, infructuosamente, que les ayudaran y perdonaran la vida, en un contexto de caos, represion sangrienta y alteracion brutal de las relaciones de propiedad. Esta brusca transformacion de las relaciones sociales deriva de la peculiar situacion de los ciudadanos implicados, que de resultas de la decision triunviral, han perdido todos sus derechos ciudadanos. Este estatuto esta en relacion con una figura alegal que surge en la ultima centuria republicana. It is possible to think of a new approach to the classical world and its modern reception, assuming all the complexity of this process, with historically explicable positive and negative values, hand in hand with an idea of culture as something dynamic, historical, mestizo, particularly in these moments in the history of Europe.

The book tackles three main problems: What constitutes political communication in the Roman world? In what ways could information be transmitted and represented? What mechanisms made political communication successful or unsuccessful?
This edited volume covers questions like speech and mechanisms of political communication, political communication at a distance, bottom-up communication, failure of communication and representation of political communication.
It will be of help to specialists in the Roman world, but also to students and researchers of political sciences, and specialists of political communication in pre-industrial times.
