In this study four types of respirators used by auto painters in a certain company were evaluated using gap analysis in twelve features specified by OSHA, work observation, and OSHA's fit test standard. Gap analysis showed that top reasons for dissatisfaction include odor filtration, strap adjustment, filtration of particles, and ease of breathing. Discomfort and poor fitting were cited as common reasons for not wearing respirators at work when users were observed. A prototype respirator was developed considering relevant facial anthropometry gathered from auto painters in the company. The new respirator used headband design for straps, silicone as material, and a single cartridge for odor filtration. The prototype was evaluated using the same methods employed in the evaluation process. The acceptability of the prototype was evaluated in twelve aspects. Results showed that users were significantly satisfied with the prototype in all features evaluated except for weight. The prototype was heavier than two of the respirators evaluated. The contour developed based on the facial anthropometry of users was able to lock the spaces along the side of the face sealing out harmful odor from the environment.

The Filipino culture of pakikisama and pakikibagay reinforced CRM teachings on teamwork and crew coordination. However, the large power gap in the Filipino culture seems to hinder open communication with superiors. The length of CRM training and its latency did not prove to be significant determinants of CRM-related attitudes.

Captains are more articulate in expressing concerns than first officers. However, in terms dealing with crewmembers, first officers are more cautious in phrasing things.

The Philippines is considered as the BPO capital of Asia due to Filipinos ability to speak English as a second language. Because of this, BPO has become an industry that contributed to the economic growth for decades. Since the industry that employs workers at various times of the day, particularly at nighttime, various talent management programs have been in place to attract a skilled workforce. However, in the light of attractive compensation and generous benefits-companies overlooked the important aspect of ergonomics issues in call center management such as workstation design, shiftwork and its effects and computer-related disorders. It was observed that call center work in the Philippines lacked focus on considering these factors, making talent management more diagnostic than preventive in avoiding employee burnout, thus making skilled talent move from one call center to another, or worse to another industry and making a career change for good. This paper will provide a conceptual framework of linking ergonomics and sustaining talent in the Business Process Industry, a look at the Philippine setting. By addressing so, it will also measure the employees' productivity which resulted in the competitiveness, growth and profitability of these call centers. This paper aims to investigate the transformative nature these BPO has employed ensure they get to keep the best talent not because of the attractive compensation and benefits they offer but the level of seriousness management has placed to alleviate workplace conditions to address these ergonomic issues of shiftwork, workstation design and computer-related disorders.

This research study aims to identify the present and probable problems of the current ultrasound workstation being used at De La Salle University-Medical Center and provide improvements and recommendation to their current workstation to increase comfort and decrease pain. The current workstation was assessed and evaluated using different ergonomic tools. Data gathered were compared with the ergonomic standards to determine if the current workstation is fit for the radiologic technologists and safe from risks and injuries. The study focused on solving the problem regarding their posture while performing the ultrasound procedure. The RULA scores were 5.43 and 4.86 for the right hand (abdomen and thyroid) and 3.43 for the left hand, which indicates that further investigation and change on the current workstation is needed soon. The Postural Analysis showed that they stretch their wrist 65% of the time, their right elbow not assisted 80% of the time, and they raise their shoulder 81% of the time. While the Nordic questionnaire, focus group discussion, and comfort survey indicated that the participants experienced pain in their body parts specifically their right wrist, right shoulder, arm, and back.

Environmental labeling is a marketing technique used to inform consumers that a company has employed a process to protect the environment. However, uncertainty remains concerning how eco-labels influence consumers. Buying green products can elicit emotion in consumers. When consumers buy eco-products, they feel that they are helping save the environment. Products provide certain emotional benefits and therefore affect mood and behavior. This study aims to examine how consumers who differ in environmental attitudes respond to eco-labels. Driving involves constant and complex coordination between vision, mind and body. Driver distraction refers to those instances when a driver’s attention is diverted from the primary task of driving the vehicle in a way that compromises safe driving performance. These distractions can degrade driving performance and even cause fatal accidents. Visual distraction and manual distraction can be directly observed through the external behaviors of drivers, such as glancing at billboards or texting/ dialing a number from a cellular phone. Visual distraction usually coexists with manual distraction because visual cues provide necessary feedback when people perform manual tasks. In this study, a conceptual framework that relates manual and visual distraction to attention and driver performance was presented. The framework will be validated using a simulated driving experiment that introduces various types of distraction. Drivers’ attention will be measured using an eye tracker.

Road traffic accidents involving motorcycles have been seen to have an upward trend in the Philippines. Previous study by Flores, Gotohio and Paras (2008) was the first and only study that considered linking motorcycle accidents with environmental and personal factors: age, lighting conditions, traffic movement, weather conditions, road character, junction type, time, day, surface conditions and driver behavior. The study fails to expound on the concept of driving behavior as well as failed to include the personality of the driver. The independent variables of the study are driver personality and riding behavior while the dependent variable is accident involvement. Emotions are compelling human experiences and product designers can take advantage of this by conceptualizing emotion-engendering products that sell well in the market. This study hypothesized that product attributes influence users’ emotions and that the relationship is moderated by the adherence of these product attributes to purchase criteria. It was further hypothesized that the emotional experience of the user influences purchase intention. A laboratory study was conducted to validate the hypotheses using mobile phones as test products. Sixty-two participants were asked to assess eight phones from a display of 10 phones and indicate their emotional experiences after assessment. Results suggest that some product attributes can cause intense emotional experience. The attributes relate to the phone's dimensions and the relationship between these dimensions. The study validated the notion of integrating affect in designing products that convey users’ personalities.

This study explores how cellular phone attributes influence the affective experiences of users. It is hypothesized that product attributes trigger emotional responses and that different sets of product attributes trigger intense emotional responses in Singapore and Philippines, two countries with different cultures. Results of the study showed that Singaporean pre-purchase affect (PPA) is intensified mostly by functional attributes such as display area, weight, and thickness while Filipino PPA is influenced by aesthetic attributes.Designers can use the results of the study as input to cellular phone design. The study also highlights the fact that cultural differences should be considered in design. The approach taken in the analysis will also be helpful in identifying specific attributes that designers can focus on.

In this study, apparent usability and affective quality were integrated in a design framework called the Usability Perception and Emotion Enhancement Model (UPEEM). The UPEEM was validated using structural equation modeling (SEM). The methodology consists of four phases namely product selection, attribute identification, design alternative generation, and design alternative evaluation. The first stage involved the selection of a product that highly involves the consumer. In the attribute identification stage, design elements of the product were identified. The possible values of these elements were also determined for use in the experimentation process. Design of experiments was used to identify how the attributes will be varied in the design alternative stage and which of the attributes significantly contribute to affective quality, apparent usability, and desirability in the design evaluation stage. Results suggest that product attributes related to form are relevant in eliciting intense affect and perception of usability in mobile phones especially those directly related to functionality and aesthetics. This study considered only four product attributes among so many due to the constraints of the research design employed. Attributes related to aesthetic perception of a product enhance apparent usability such as those related to dimensional ratios.

Abstract A conceptual model of product emotion was developed considering the pre-purchase context. The main proposition of this model is that affect generated in the pre-purchase context is a result of product evaluation using consumergenerated criteria. The process starts when a consumer becomes interested in the distinctive, integrative and interactive features of a product. A survey was conducted to determine the criteria used by consumers when buying clothes, watches, and electronic products.

In recent years, many printed circuit board manufacturing firms have looked upon worker productivity improvement as the means by which they can improve their firm performance. This paper uses the critical factors and interpretive structural modeling to determine the structure of analytical hierarchical process model in fuzzy environment. Fuzzy analytic hierarchy process-based methodology was used to tackle the different decision criteria in a hierarchical structure in the improvement of worker productivity. The findings advocate that these manufacturing firms would thereby the hierarchical model to setup the priorities of the worker productivity improvement. And best practice, reduce unit cost and physical working environment are the crucial sub-factors for worker productivity improvement.
