Marika Djolai
I am conflict, peace and development specialist with a PhD in Development Studies (Conflict and Violence). I work in the Balkans and Eurasia. Organisations I worked for include UNICEF, the British Council, BBC Media Action, Westminster Foundation for Democracy, Swiss Development Cooperation and Institute for Development Studies, among others. I am experienced in project management, fundraising, budget management, reporting, monitoring and evaluation, academic research and policy analysis. As a research scholar I am a member of Balkans in Europe Policy Advisory Group. Our work supports EU integration of the Western Balkans countries. I work on the resolution of bilateral issues that block the EU perspective and regional cooperation.
My current work and research interest are peace, security and development, with emphasis on peacebuilding and post-war violence, violent extremism and radicalisation. My second area of expertise is social exclusion and inclusion, particularly in conflict affected and fragile countries, with experience in Bosnia and Herzegovina. I work across quantitative and qualitative research methods and approaches.
During the Yugoslav wars I was a peace activist and political activist, political opponent to Milosevic's regime. I was co-founder and Board Member of NGO House of Tolerance and Charity Association 'Pannonia' that promoted rights of women, minorities and politically oppressed. I worked extensively with local independent media and human rights organizations. I am committed to to helping people affected by conflict and understanding change it brings at the research and policy levels.
Supervisors: Patricia Justino and Jeremy Allouche
