hi! I don't know if you've answered a question like this before, but do you happen to know how to explain the historical differences between a chinese hanfu and a qipao?
Hi, thanks for the question!
To put it very simply, hanfu is an umbrella term referring to all of the historical clothing that was originated & worn by Han Chinese up to the Qing dynasty. It is currently undergoing a modern revival due to the hanfu movement. Qipao (aka cheongsam), on the other hand, refers to a specific 20th-century garment that was popularized in the 1920s (during the Republican era), and is mainly worn today for special occasions. Hanfu includes attire worn by all genders, while qipao was historically only worn by women (the historical male equivalent of the qipao is the changshan).
For more details, please check out my post here explaining the historical differences between hanfu and qipao, as well as this conversation discussing the historical origins of qipao.
Hope this helps!

Can I ask what brands you’ve purchased from? I’m interested in buying hanfu and I’ve looked at shop recommendations but your recommendations and experiences are helpful.
Hi! Thanks for the question!
I’m not a hanfu connoisseur tbh. I find a few brands that I vibe with and tend to follow up on their styles each season so you won’t see a huge list of recommendations.
@ziseviolet has a very nice list of recs if you haven’t seen it already! And if any followers would like to post their favorite shops in the replies, please do.
That being said I have purchased hanfu from:
十三余 小豆蔻儿/Shi San Yu Xiao Dou Kou Er (Shisanyu for short)
↑ About 80% of my hanfu. I guess you can call me brand loyal lol
I have not bought anything from 明镜/Ming Jing but I really like their stuff and plan to someday.
And that’s it! It’s not a big list of brands, apologies! I love pastels and “floaty” looking hanfu so Tang and Song styles are my favorite. But these days I’ve also been wearing a lot of Ming style so I guess it just depends on my mood. I also love hanyuansu styles. I hope this helps!

Lovely Chinese hanfu outfits inspired by Chinese flower goddesses (huashen/花神) that are celebrated during the Flower Festival (huazhaojie/花朝节) in spring. Both outfits consist of large-sleeve cross-collar waist-high ruqun embroidered with flowers. Pibo (long scarf accessory) and floral waist ornaments complete the look. Hanfu from Yuan Shan Qiao/远山乔.
