The Isle of the Dead is an island in Phantom Hourglass.[1] It is located in the Northeastern Sea.

Features and Overview

After obtaining the Northeastern Sea Chart, Link arrives at the Isle of the Dead in search of the Pure Metals. Near the shore is a small cave containing the journal of the explorer McNey,[2] who had surmised that the island resembles a king's head,[3] and believes that solving the island's cryptic puzzles will lead him to the Aquanine.[4] Behind a bombable wall in the cave is a hidden room filled with Rupoors and Keese, whereby avoiding these traps leads Link to several Treasure Chests containing a Wisdom Gem, Treasure Map #28, and two Ship Parts.

Link encountering McNey in the Phantom Corridor

Exiting the cave takes Link to the island proper, where Stalfos and Rupee Likes await him. To the northwest is the closed-off sages' graveyard,[5] while to the northeast is the pyramid-shaped tomb of Brant, a knight of the Cobble Kingdom.[6] Inside the tomb is the Phantom Corridor, an endless series of rooms where those without the knowledge of the sages will never proceed.[7] There, Link finds the remains of McNey, whose lingering spirit warns him to escape by walking south.[8] A nearby Stone Tablet provides a hint to accessing the graveyard.[9]

Starting from the Tree in the island's southeast—the "king's chin"—, Link must walk 13 tiles east and seven north, then use the Shovel to access an underground passage filled with rolling Boulders and Keese. Another bombable wall here leads to a hidden room filled with Rupees, a Power Gem, and another hint.[10] At the end of the passage, stairs lead to an elevated portion of the island representing the "king's eye"; a small Chest containing Treasure Map #29 is found up here. Firing an Arrow to the west will hit a Shock Switch that opens the graveyard's door.

Inside the graveyard are nine Tombstones which more Stalfos hide behind. While three of the Tombstones have illegible messages,[11] the other six provide the directions through the Phantom Corridor.[12] By following these directions, Link reaches the ghost of Brant at his tomb. Recognizing the Fairy spirits traveling with Link,[13] Brant gives the young hero access to a Treasure Chest containing the Regal Necklace, which allows him to travel to the Isle of Ruins.[14]
