IMHO, Lipstadt is nothing but a knee-biter. She couldn’t take on the historian, David Irving, directly since at the time he was regarded as one of the premier historians of the Third Reich and Lipstadt was and still is an intellectual lightweight. Instead she launched an attack on Irving in a book, Denying the Holocaust, published by Penguin claiming that he was a crypto Nazi. This cut heavily into Irving’s livelihood, writing and lecturing on the Third Reich.

This was the first stage in a Zugzwang, which I suspect was devised by someone else, since the plot seems beyond Lipstadt’s rather modest intellect. Irving made his living from his research and writing and felt compelled to sue Lipstadt and Penguin for libel in order to protect his livelihood. Friends warned Irving that he was being set up and that he should ignore Lipstadt, who was a nonentity and whose influence would rapidly wane.

Instead Irving fell into the trap. The trial judge was openly hostile to Irving. Lipstadt’s backers spent millions of pounds and used hundreds of volunteers to sift through Irving’s many thousands of pages of published books and articles. Ultimately and unsurprisingly they came up with misstatements and errors in Irving’s prodigious output. That was all the judge needed to find in favor of Lipstadt. Irving was financially ruined and his reputation has yet to recover.

Before this no course on modern German history would have had a syllabus that didn’t include several of Irving’s works. Since then he has become a non-person in academia. It’s hard to find his books on library shelves. This is a sad loss for anyone who seriously wishes to understand twentieth century European history.

To add insult to injury, the usual suspects produced a propaganda movie, Denial, in 2016. The hideous goblin Lipstadt was played by the attractive actress, Rachel Weisz. Irving, who is a tall, imposing and rather handsome figure in real life, was played by a short and rather ugly actor, who was made up and crouched to look like Quasimodo. The entire movie suggested that it was Lipstadt who was the hapless victim and Irving who was viciously attacking her. Two Jewish friends took me to see it, before I knew what it was about. I now regret that I was too appalled to comment.

I bought her book and found it completely disappointing. If anything, it left me with further doubts about the veracity of the “revealed truth” of the “greatest crime in history” which surprisingly enough did not merit even a mention in the encyclopedic histories of WW2 authored by Churchill, De Gaulle, and Eisenhower. There were no substantive arguments against the forensic and other evidence uncovered by “deniers” but what I found was Lipstadt artfully employing time and again the same sorts of disingenuous tactics which she alleges her adversaries use. Lipstadt’s trademark style is assertion after assertion presented without supporting evidence, “conventional wisdom,” which the reader is expected to accept without question at face value, plus scurrilous ad hominem attacks. She denounced Irving as a crude misogynist, so his evidence merited no further examination. She snidely noticed that he is not a historian by profession – even though recent holocaust fantasists such as Goldhagen likewise have their degrees in other fields than history. Raoul Hilberg, the most respected holocaust court historian, is repeatedly cited by Lipstadt even though his estimate of the total deaths at 5.1, not six, million, is never mentioned, nor are the inceassant attacks against him by the holocaustians during his lifetime for refusing to politicize the sufferings of Jews in WWII.

Everything which Wise’s correspondent recounts here there is consistent with the known behavior of the SA during March and February 1933. The signs were that the SA was building up a wave of violence, with multiple assassinations in the streets of Jewish shopkeepers, which were intended to build into something much bigger that the 1-day boycott of April 1. It was the campaign launched by people like Untermeyer and Wise which, despite a general lack of support from the wider community, persuaded Hitler that he needed to pull the SA in for a while as Germany rearmed.

Whether you like it or not, it’s just a fact that if Hitler had never come to power then White would never have involved himself in a Soviet intelligence network. Nothing in White’s biography shows him as someone who took an interest in Lenin’s theory of a revolutionary party. He was only interested in helping Hitler’s enemy. Most likely is that without Hitler in office, White would simply have been a conventional New Dealer. Supporting Roosevelt, but with no reason to reach out to Stalin through extra-legal routes.

He simply viewed the alliance with the USSR in 1942 as highly important and became involved in something which he was thereafter bound to.

A British sergeant reported on the disposal of bodies at Dresden:
