Standard Form

A number between 1 and 10 Any whole number

(excluding 10) (can be negative)

𝑎 × 10 𝑏
(No need to copy this)
Standard Form is useful for two reasons:
1. It allows us to write really small or really big numbers concisely...
2. It allows us to compare small and big numbers.
Which is bigger?!  Which is bigger? 
234000000000000 23400000000000 2.34 x 1014 2.34 x 1013
On a calculator?

( 4.86 × 10 ) ÷ ( 2.88 × 10 )
21 9
Converting from Standard Form
We just consider how many times we’re multiplying or dividing by 10.

3 x 104 1.24 x 105

= 30000
? = 124000
?

Hint: Remember
what happens
6 x 10-3 when we have a
negative index.
1.01 x 10-1
= 0.006
? = 0.101

Converting from Standard Form
We just consider how many times we’re multiplying or dividing by 10.

= 30,120,000
? = 75?

8.31 x 100 2.4 x 10-6

Converting to Standard Form
How many times do we need to move the decimal point until we’re in the
range 1 to 10? (excluding 10)

20000 0.0043
= 2 x 10
? 4
= 4.3 x ?10-3

931,000,000 0.000001001
