Lesson 2

A. Tangents and
Secants
of a Circle
B. Chords, Secant and
Tangent Segments
Objectives
1. illustrate tangents and secants
of circles
2. prove theorems on tangents
and secants
3. solve problems involving
tangents and secants of circles
ABSTRACTION
Tangent Line to a circle is a
line coplanar with the circle
and intersects it in one and
A
only one point. The point of
intersection of the line and
the circle is called the point
of tangency.

Secant is a line that

A
intersects a circle at
exactly two points . It
contains a chord of a
circle. B

Theorems on Angles Formed
by Tangents and Secants
1. If two secants
N
intersect in the P
exterior of a circle, x
M
then the measure of
the angle formed is
one-half the positive
difference of the Y
measures of the
intercepted arcs.
2. If a secant and a tangent intersect in the
exterior of a circle, then the measure of the
angle formed is one-half the positive difference
of the measures of the intercepted arcs.

drawn to a circle from the same
external point, the product of
the lengths of one secant
segment and its external part is
equal to the product of the
lengths of the other secant
segment and its external part.

7. On a dare, Ellen attempts to
throw darts while wearing a
blindfold. She throws four
darts. Three of the darts land
on the farthest outer edge of
the circular dartboard and the
fourth dart sticks in the wall.
When measured, it is found that
darts labeled D, A and R are
collinear, TR = 8 inches, AR= 4
inches and that TR is tangent to
the dartboard at T. How many
inches are between dart D and
dart A?
