The Parable of the Rich

Man and Lazarus

Luke 16:19-31
“There was a rich man who was dressed in
purple and fine linen and lived in luxury
every day. At his gate was laid a beggar
named Lazarus, covered with sores and
longing to eat what fell from the rich man’s
table. Even the dogs came and licked his
sores. The time came when the beggar died,
and the angels carried him to Abraham’s
side. The rich man also died and was buried.
In Hades, where he was in torment, he looked
up and saw Abraham far away, with Lazarus
So he called to him, ‘Father Abraham, have pity
on me and send Lazarus to dip the tip of his
finger in water and cool my tongue, because I
am in agony in this fire.’
But Abraham replied, ‘Son, remember that in
your lifetime you received your good things,
while Lazarus received bad things, but now he is
comforted here and you are in agony. And
besides all this, between us and you a great
chasm has been set in place, so that those who
want to go from here to you cannot, nor can
He answered, ‘Then I beg you, father, send
Lazarus to my family, for I have five brothers.
Let him warn them, so that they will not also
come to this place of torment.’
Abraham replied, ‘They have Moses and the
Prophets; let them listen to them.’
‘No, father Abraham,’ he said, ‘but if
someone from the dead goes to them, they
will repent.’
He said to him, ‘If they do not listen to Moses
and the Prophets, they will not be convinced

EMBODIED
SPIRIT
Philosophers consider the human person
as the union of the body and spirit. Thus,
the term embodied spirit.
The usual and known connotation that
comes to our mind when we hear the
word “embodied” is always materialized
or became flesh (with physical form).
Thus, when we say “embodied spirit”, we
normally believed and conclude of a spirit
becoming flesh.
Embodied spirit is an animating core living
within each of us. It is known to be the driving
force behind what we actually think, do and
say.
The spirit and the body go hand in hand in
making us who we are. Whatever affects the
body also affects the soul.
This embodiment enables the person to
experience both the physical world and the
spiritual world.
Our experience is a product of
embodiment. The human mind processes
information through the senses, which are
experienced through the body. Aside from
perceiving things, we also react to them
emotionally.
Human embodiment allows a person to
attach certain feelings or ideas not only to
people, but also to objects.
How does the body
limit the spirit?
The Human Body in Imposing
Limits and Possibilities
From biological and physical standpoint, it
can be recognized that the human body,
although it can perform many functions
also has limitations. Limits in the
environment, demographics, and society
may also hinder a person from reaching
transcendence.
here some
•examples:
Mental and emotional disorders (e.g.
anxiety, intellectual disabilities)
• Disabilities (e.g. amputated leg,
deafness)
• Disease and illness (e.g. hypertension
and cough)
• Failures and experience (e.g.g failing a
subject)
Social and environmental
limitations
•Socioeconomic status
• Location of neighborhood (e.g. armed,
disorganized, or violent neighborhood)
• Abusive relationship (e.g. emotional
abuse)
• Negative influences (e.g. drug use)
How does human
nature enable us to
surpass our limits?
TRANSCENDENCE
 The ability to surpass limits is called
“Transcendence“. The word comes
from the Latin prefix "TRANS”meaning
"beyond," and the word "SCANDARE”,
meaning "to climb."
 When you achieve transcendence, you
have gone beyond ordinary limitations.
It is through our limitations that
possibilities become real.
TRANSCENDENCE
The ability to surpass limits is called
“Transcendence“. The word comes from the Latin
prefix "TRANS”meaning "beyond," and the word
"SCANDARE”, meaning "to climb."
Our MIND is an important tool that allows us to
go beyond many of our physical limits. As
persons, we are able to exercise our imagination
and reflection to go beyond our own thoughts and
experiences.
Example:
The body limits us. Unlike
birds that can fly, we have no
wings to make us fly. But with
creative minds, we Invented
jets and planes to make us fly
even farther than any bird.
Each individual carries within himself
the possibility of transcending his
limits by exerting enough effort and
perseverance.
The essence of transcendence is to
acknowledge our limitations,identify
possibilities for development and
change ourselves for the better.
Applying
Transcendence in our
daily lives
 It is also important to know that
transcendence may be applied to
present worries by living in the present.
 This means that life is lived from
moment to moment in a care free and
exuberant manner where concerns for
stress are reserved for the future, and
regrets or guilt feelings are kept in the
past.
Overcoming Limitations
Body limits can be tested by trying on new
experiences and working on challenges
with increasing levels of difficulty. The
human body, if given enough exposure to
any situation, can attain a goal efficiency.
Some key points to remember
when going beyond your
limits
• You are connected to the external and
internal world.
• Challenges are learning opportunities.
• Your goal is more important than your
fears.
• Think outside the box.
• Recognize that everyone has fears.
