Manifestation of Cultural
Diversity of Assam
Assam is located in northeastern India, bordered by Bhutan, Arunachal
Pradesh, Nagaland, Meghalaya, and West Bengal. Known as the "Gateway to
the Northeast.

Famous for its tea gardens, rich biodiversity, one horn rhino and the
Brahmaputra River.

The culture of Assam is influenced by its geography, history, and the diverse
communities that live there.

Known for its rich culture and diverse population, the culture of Assam is a
fusion of Indo Burmese, Mongolian and Aryan influences.

The natives are called Axomiya which is also the state language of Assam

Assam has over 50 languages spoken by its diverse communities


Tradition

Bihu Dance: Bihu is the most popular folk dance and it represent assam in global stage.

Mekhela Chador and Riha-Mekhela: Worn by Assamese women

Suria/Dhoti and Seleng: Traditional attire for men, often complemented by the versatile
Gamosa (গামোচা).

The Gamosa (গামোচা): A white rectangular handwoven cloth with red borders, symbolizing
honor and purity. Used in daily life, rituals, বিহু (Bihu) celebrations, and to felicitate guests.

Xorai (ই
‌‌ ): A token of devotion, respect, and hospitality.

Japi: It is a traditional conical hat from assam which is made from tightly woven bamboo and
and tokou paat a large, palm leaf.

Traditional Attire
There are 29 different Tribes in Assam

Tribes: Bodo, Mishing, Karbi, Dimasa, Rabha, Tiwa, Ahom, Deori, Sonowal Kachari
etc.

Traditional attire:

Bodo: Dokhona

Mishing: Ege-gasar and rih

Karbi: Pe-kok, Pinium

Dimasa: Rigu, Rikha.

Common garments like Mekhela Chador.


Folk Music of Assam

Rich Heritage: Assam's folk music dates back to the Kamarup Kingdom and the
Ahom Dynasty, shaped by its diverse rulers.

Indigenous Folk Music: Inspired legendary artists like Bhupen Hazarika, Parvati
Prasad Barua, and Jayanta Hazarika.

Classical Music Traditions: Borgeet: Melodic devotional songs rooted in Vaishnavism.

Ojapali: A vibrant blend of narrative singing and dance, featuring a raga system with
traditional influences.

Nagara Nam: It has been an integral part of Assamese culture for centuries.
Festivals of Assam

Major festivals: - Bihu: Rongali Bihu (Spring), Kongali Bihu (Harvest),


Bhogali Bihu (Feast).

Ali-Ai-Ligang: Celebrated by Mishing community.

Baishagu: Bodo community festival.


Assamese Cuisine

Staple foods: Rice and fish.

Tribal delicacies:

Bodo: Onla (rice flour curry with bamboo shoots).

Mishing: Apong (rice beer), pork with bamboo shoot.

Karbi: Smoked meat dishes.

Popular Assamese dishes: Pitha, tenga maas (sour fish curry), doi-chira
(curd and flattened rice).

Symbolism of Tamul Paan (তামোল পান) : A token of devotion, respect,

Namghar, Bhaona, Sankardev)
Srimanta Sankardev: A reformer who popularized Satriya culture and arts.

Satra: Monastic institutions promoting neo-Vaishnavism, founded by


Srimanta Sankardev.

Bhaona: Traditional dance-drama performances with religious themes.

Rash Mahotsava: Vaishnavite festival honor to Lord Krishna.

Dance of Assam)
Originated in Vaishnavite Satras.

Themes: Devotional narratives based on Lord Krishna’s life.

Features: Graceful hand movements, rhythmic footwork, and symbolic


gestures.
