GRADUALITY OF THE REVELATION
The Qur’ān was revealed in piecemeal within an approximated period of
23 years, according to the needs of time and to provide solutions to the
problems which came before the Messenger of Allāh (SAW). The
revelation of the Qur’ān began on the 15th night of the month of
Ramadān at the 41st year of the Messenger's life. The first five verses of
Sūratu ’lcAlaq was the first revelation of the Qur’ān while the
Messenger of Allāh was in the cave of Hira’. The verses are:

Recite in the name of your Lord Who created. (He) Created the man
from (mere) clot of congealed blood. Recite and your Lord is Most
Bountiful Most Generous. Who taught the pen. He taught the man what
he does not know [Q.96: 1-5].
CONT. …….
Regarding the last verse of the the Qur’ān to be revealed to the
Prophet, many narrations have been reported. One report has it that the
last revelation is:

“And fear and be afraid of a day in which you shall finally return to
Allāh, then every soul shall be clearly paid what he had done and
earned, and they shall not be dealt with unjustly”. [Q.2: 281].
CONT. ……..
Some jurists however hold the view that the last revealed verse in the
Qur’ān is:

“… this day I have perfected for you your religion and I have
completed my bounties on you and I am pleased with the religion of
peace (Islam)” [Q.5 :3]. This was revealed in the 10th year of Hijrah
corresponding to the 63rd year of the Messenger of Allāh's life.
However, the first opinion is most preferable one.)
2.3.6. LEGAL VERSES OF THE
QUR’ĀN (’ĀYĀTU ’L-’AHKĀM)
Āyātu ’l-’Ahkām (legal verses) of the Qur’ān are of paramount
importance to the jurists.
Ahkām (injunctions) of the Qur’ān are of primary importance in the
life of Muslims. They form the sources of Fiqh (jurisprudence). They
are the code of conduct for every Muslim from birth to death. They
distinguish between Halāl (lawful) and Harām (unlawful) in every
sphere of life. And this is one among the reasons why the Qur’ān is
also called Al-Furqān (the criteria).
The Qur’ān, unlike the man-made laws, is not amendable. Therefore,
its wordings have remained the same for the last 1436 years. The
scholars of Qur’ān have enumerated varying number of verses of legal
injunctions but the number is approximately considered to be 500.
CONT. ……..
The verses deal with marriage, polygamy, dower, maintenance,
rights and obligations of the spouses, divorce and various modes of
dissolution of marriage, the period of retreat after divorce or death
(c Iddatu ’t-Talāq or wafāt), contracts, loans, deposits, weights and
measures, removal of injury, oaths and vows, punishments for
crime, wills, inheritance, equity, fraternity, liberty, justice to all,
principles of ideal state, fundamental human rights, moralities and
immoralities, laws of war and peace, judicial administration etc.
The numerous Qur’anic legal injunctions are designed to promote
man’s welfare in this world and improve his prospects in the
Hereafter. From this, it follows that there are two sides to every
human act, one that involves this worldly life and the other one
that involves the life after-death.
CONT. …….
The Qur’ān declared homicide unlawful and stated in clear terms
concerning its worldly punishment thus:
