DEFINITION
• Communication can be regarded as a two way process of exchanging
or shaping ideas , feeling and information.

• Communication is more than mere exchange of information.

• It is a process important to pave way for desired changes in human


behavior and informed individual and population participation to
achieve goals.
• Communication and education are interwoven. Communication
strategies can enhance learning.

• The ultimate goal of all communications is to bring about change in


the desired direction of the person who receives the communication.
COMMUNICATION PROCESSES
It has the following main component
• Sender [source]
• Receiver [audience]
• Message
• Channel [ medium]
• Feedback [effect]
SENDER
The sender ( communicator ) is the beginner of the message
To be an effective sender , he must know
• His objective defines
• His audience: it’s interest and needs
• His message
• Channels of communication
• His professional pros and limitations
RECEIVER

• All communications must have an audience, this may be a single


person or a group of people.

• With no the audience, communication is nothing more than mere


noise
MESSAGE
A Message ( or “ technical know – how) is the information which the
sender transmits to his audience to receive, understand, accept and act
upon
• It may be in the form of word , pictures or signs
• A good message must be :
• In line with the objective.
• Meaningful
• Based on felt needs
• Clear and understandable
CHANNELS OF COMMUNICATION
By channels is implied the “physical bridges” or the medium of
communications between the sender and receiver.

• Media system
• The total effort is based on 3 media system
• Interpersonal communication
• Mass media
• Folk media
FEEDBACK
• It is the flow of information from the audience to the sender.

• In mass communication it takes sometime to get feedback.

• Feedback is generally obtained through polls, attitude survey and


interview
TYPES OF COMMUNICATION
ONE WAY COMMUNICATION (DIDACTIC METHOD)
• The flow of communication is “one way” from the sender to the
audience.
• The best example is the lecture method in classrooms.
• Drawbacks of this methods are-
• Knowledge is imposed
• Learning is authoritative
• Does not influence human behavior
TWO WAY COMMUNICATION
(SOCRATIC METHOD )
• In a two way method of communication both the sender and the
audience take part.

• The audience may raise question and add their own information,
ideas and opinions to the subject.
VERBAL COMMUNICATION
• The oldest way of communication has been by word of mouth

• Direct verbal communication by word of mouth may be loaded with


hidden meaning
NON VERBAL COMMUNICATION
• Communication can occur even with no words.
• It includes a whole range of bodily movements, posture, gesture,
facial expression
• Silence is non verbal communication
VISUAL COMMUNICATION
• The visual form of communication comprise “chart and graphs,
pictures ,tables , maps, posters” etc.
TELECOMMUNICATION AND
INTERNET
• Telecommunication is the process of communication over distance
using electromagnetic instruments designed for the purpose

• Radio , TV , and internet etc. are mass communication media


examples.
