Group Activity

Perform an investigation to
distinguish between
electrical potential energy
and electrical potential.
Objective: Define electrical potential energy.
Uniform Electric Field
Uniform electric field: is a field that has the
same magnitude and direction at all points.

Example: Electric field between two parallel

plates (battery, capacitor).

9
Objective: Define electrical potential energy.

Objective: Define electrical potential energy.
Electrical Potential Energy
Mechanical work that is stored as electric
energy is referred to as electric potential
energy.

Electrical potential energy: is the potential

energy stored within a charged object due to
its position in an electric field.

Electrical potential energy is a component of

mechanical energy.
Objective: Define electrical potential energy.
Electrical Potential Energy
Separating two charges
that attract each other
requires mechanical
work. This work is stored
in the electric field as
electric potential energy.
Moving two charges that
repel each other closer
together requires
mechanical work. This
work is stored in the
electric field as electric
potential energy.
Objective: Distinguish between electrical
potential energy and change in electrical
potential energy.
Electrical Potential Energy
Note:
Recall from your study of work and energy that
any time a force is used to move an object, work is
done on that object.

This statement is also true for charges moved by

an electric force.

Whenever a charge moves because of the electric

field produced by another charge or
group of charges, work is 13
potential energy and change in electrical
potential energy.
Change in Electrical Potential
Energy
When a charge is displaced in a uniform
electric field, there is a change in the
electrical potential energy (PEelectric)
associated with the charge’s new position in
the electric field.
The change in the electrical potential energy
depends on the charge (q), the strength of
the electric field (E), and the displacement
(d).

Change in Electrical Potential
Energy
∆PE = -qEd
electric

Where:
∆PEelectric : change in electric potential energy
(J)
q: charge (C)
E: Electric field (N/C)
d: displacement (m)
Note: The negative sign indicates that the
electrical potential energy will increase if the
charge is negative and decrease if the charge is 15
Objective: Distinguish between electrical
potential energy and change in electrical
potential energy.
Electrical Potential Energy
Note: If the displacement of the charge
starts from the reference point (zero level),
then the initial electrical potential energy is
zero.

• ∆PEelectric = PEf – PEi

• ∆PEelectric = PEf

Objective: Distinguish between electrical
potential energy and change in electrical
potential energy.
Electrical Potential Energy
Electrical potential energy is the potential
energy stored within a charged object due to
its position in an electric field.

Note: Another unit of Electrical Potential Energy

is: Electron Volt (eV).
1 eV = 1.6 × 10-19 J
potential energy and change in electrical
potential energy.
Change in Electrical Potential
Energy
Note: The change in electric potential energy
differs between positive and negative charges.

1. A positive charge moving in the direction of

electric field loses potential energy,
so ∆PEelectric is negative.

2. A negative charge moving in the direction of

electric field gains potential energy, so
∆PEelectric is positive. 18
potential energy and change in electrical
potential energy.
Change in Electrical Potential
Energy
3. A positive charge moving in the direction
opposite to electric field gains
potential energy, so ∆PEelectric
is positive.

4. A negative charge moving in the direction

opposite to electric field loses
potential energy, so ∆PEelectric is 19
negative.
Objective: Differentiate between electrical
potential and potential difference.
Electric Potential
The electric potential at some point is
defined as the electrical potential energy
associated with a charged particle in an
electric field divided by the charge of the
particle.
Objective: Differentiate between electrical
potential and potential difference.
Electric Potential

21
Objective: Differentiate between electrical
potential and potential difference.
Potential Difference
Potential Difference equals the work that must
be performed against electric forces to move a
charge between the two points in question,
divided by the charge.

Potential difference is a change in electric

potential.

Objective: Differentiate between electrical
potential and potential difference.
Potential Difference
The potential difference in a uniform field
varies with the displacement from a
reference point.

The SI unit of potential difference is: Volt

(V). 1 V = 1 J/C
Objective: Differentiate between electrical
potential and potential difference.
Potential Difference
Note: Displacement (d) is parallel to the
electric field.

So, the motion that is perpendicular to the

field does not change the electrical
potential energy (∆PEelectric = 0J). Therefore
the potential difference is zero (∆V = 0 V).

24
Objective: Identify situations in which
conservation of mechanical energy is valid.
Conservation of Mechanical
Energy
In the absence of friction (closed system),
mechanical energy (ME) is conserved (no loss in
energy).
So, the change in mechanical energy is zero
(∆ME = 0 J).

MEi = MEf
25
Objective: Investigate the net electrical
potential exerted on a test charge by a group
of charges.
Non-Uniform Electric Field
Consider a source charge and the electric
fields are surrounding it.

The field lines are not parallel, so the electric

field is not uniform.

26
Objective: Investigate the net electrical
potential exerted on a test charge by a group
of charges.
Non-Uniform Electric Field
Non-Uniform Electric Field: is the field that
is irregular at every point.

The field lines are not parallel.

Example: source charge and the

electric fields are
surrounding it.
27
Objective: Investigate the net electrical
potential exerted on a test charge by a group
of charges.
Potential Difference
Potential difference in
case of non-uniform
electric field:
At right, the electric
potential at point A (test
charge) depends on the
charge at point B (source
charge) and the distance
(r).
Objective: Investigate the net electrical
potential exerted on a test charge by a group
of charges.
Net Electric Potential
The superposition principle can be used to
calculate the electric potential for a group of
charges.

Superposition principle states that the total

electric potential due to two or more charges
is equal to the algebraic sum of the potentials
due to the individual charges.

Vnet = V1 + V2 +V3 + … 29
