Algebraic fractions
⫸ Algebraic fractions are fractions that contain pronumerals
⫸ We treat them the exact same as normal fractions, with an
emphasis on factoring
⫸ The Golden Rule when working with fractions is to multiply
or divide both the numerator and denominator by the same
number/expression
Simplifying fractions
⫸ Look for any common expressions that can be factorised and then cancel
Example 1. Simplify:
a.) b.) c.)
Adding & Subtracting Fractions
⫸ Change the fractions to equivalent fractions to the same denominator!
Example 2. Simplify:
a.) b.) c.)
Example 3. Factor the denominators, and then simplify:
Multiplying & Dividing Algebraic Fractions
⫸ Factor the numerator and denominators fully
⫸ Cancel out any common factors/expressions
⫸ We can only cancel up/down or diagonally!
⫸ Then multiply the numerators & denominators
⫸ When dividing algebraic fractions, simply flip the second fraction
and the division symbol () becomes a multiplication symbol ()
Example 4. Simplify:
a.) b.)
⫸ A compound fraction contains fractions in the numerator or denominator
Compound fractions
⫸ To simplify, find the lowest common multiple of ALL the denominators and multiply to
turn all our fractions into non-fractions
Example 5. Simplify:
a.) b.)
