KHO-KHO

 History of Kho-Kho
◈ Kho-Kho is a popular traditional sport of India. It was
originated at Pune Gymkhana in the state of
Maharashtra. Kho-Kho has been extremely popular in all
the Marathi speaking areas.
◈ The word Kho-Kho is derived from the Sanskrit word 'Syu'
which means ' get up and go'. It is a tag game played
between two teams of 12 players each and only 9
nominated players of attacker's team and 3 nominated
from the defender's team enter the court.
◈ Kho-Kho demands physical fitness, speed, strength,
stamina and a certain amount of agility and ability.
◈ This game develops qualities like discipline,
sportsmanship, teamwork and loyalty amongst team
members.
• It was first introduced for demonstration in
1982 Asian Games.
• Kho-Kho Federation of India was formed in
1955 and it organised the first nationals for
men in 1959.
• Competitions for women in Kho-Kho were
included in the nationals from 1961.
• Asian Kho-Kho Federation was established in
1987 during 3rd SAF Games,Kolkata.
• The First Asian Kho-Kho Championship was
held in Kolkata in 1986.
• This game which started in India has now
become popular in the entire Asia.
• Brij Hal Dania is known as the Father of Kho-

 Latest General Rules of
Kho-Kho
1. Toss winning team shall have the right to
choose attack
or defense.
2. Dimension of the Kho-Kho field is 27m x 16m.
3. Each side consists of 12 players and only 9
players shall
take the field for the match.
4. At at time 9 attackers and 3 defenders can
enter the field.
5. At the beginning of the game, 8 attackers will
be seated
be played. If the tie still remains another innings
should be
started. As soon as the first point is scored by the
chaser,
the turn should be over and time taken by the
chaser in
scoring this point should be noted. Now the
chasers should
take their defensive turn and the time taken by the

opponent's of scoring the first point should be


noted. The
team that has taken less time to score a point,
wins the match.
9. When the defender goes out of the
contest area, then he/she is declared
out.
10. If the defender enters the court, late,
then he/she is declared out.
11. During the game, 3 attackers can be
changed. Runners cannot be changed.
12. The chaser can chase the runner only in
90 degree direction at shoulder level
except in free zone.
13. Runner can run in any direction.
 Terminology
1. Chaser : The player who sits in squares is called
chaser.
2. Active chaser: The player who tries to touch the
runner, is
called active chaser.
3. Runner: The player of the side other than those of
chaser, is
called runner.
4. Fake Kho: Pretending to give a kho
5. Giving Kho : A chaser must say “Kho” when he
gives signal to
6. Fake Kho and Sudden Kho: in Fake kho, the
chaser shows
that he has given kho to his team mates but he
is actually
chasing the runner. In sudden kho the chaser
gives
immediate kho to team mate making it hard for
runner to
avoid getting caught.
7. Choosing direction: Chaser must keep his foot
out of box
with care as his foot will decide which way he
will run to
chase the runner else a foul will be counted.
11. Late-Kho: when active chaser delays in the
touch for giving
Kho to another.
12. Line-cut: When chaser cuts the square line
cross lanes or
center lane during chasing opponent.
13. Changing the direction: When active chaser
goes in the
wrong direction against rules.
14. Early getup: When the sitting chaser gets up
before proper
getting Kho.
16. Minus-Kho: A violation of directional
fault in
which the chased cannot make the
running player
out unless Kho is passed back to two
teammates
or touch to a pole.
17. Lobby: The free space area around the
play field.
18. Free zone: The area by the sides of pole
lines in

The brief explanation of some of the fundamental
skills is given below:
1. Giving Kho. A chaser must say the word ‘Kho’
when he is
touching the sitting chaser.
2. Taking direction: After receiving the kho, a
chaser should
take his first step out of the cross lane with care
because
that step will decide his direction to move.
3. Fake kho: In such Kho, the chaser pretends to
give kho but
4. Tapping: Tapping is touching an active runner
by
extending an arm. While tapping, the body
should lean
forward and arm should be extended
completely.
5. Trapping: For trapping, the active chaser
should try to
bring two or three runners to one side or
towards the
post.
6. Diving: In this technique, a chaser pounces on
