Factoring

Polynomials
OBJECTIVE

 factor polynomials.
Recall:

The Factor Theorem has implications for

polynomial functions. That is, if x – c is a
factor of P(x), then P(c) = 0. In other words, c
is a solution (or root) of P(x) = 0.
Recall:
The Rational Root Theorem
Given a polynomial P(x) defined by
P(x) = anxn + an-1xn-1 +… + a1x + a0
with integer coefficients and where n is a non-
negative integer, the possible rational roots of
p
P(x) are of the form , where p is a factors of q
a0 and q is a factors of an.
Example
Determine whether x + 5 is a
factor of x3 + 7x2 + 2x – 40.
Let P(x) = x3 + 7x2 + 2x – 40
P(–5) = (–5)3 + 7(–5)2 + 2(–5) – 40
= –125 + 175 – 10 – 40
=0
because P(–5) = 0, x + 5 is a factor of
x3 + 7x2 + 2x – 40.

Factor x3 – 2x2 – 11x + 12.
