Lesson 1

Computer Data Storage

Objectives:
At the end of the lesson, you are expected to:

1. Describe storage system.

2. Classify the various components and types of storage system.
3. Know the factors to be considered in evaluating a Storage Device.
Introduction
All storage systems have a particular component, including
having a storage medium and a storage device, portability,
availability, volatility, and how data is accessed and
represented, the type of storage technology that should be
used, and the like. The storage system has two parts, namely
the storage medium and the storage device. A storage medium
is a storage system where data is saved or stored, like a DVD,
flash memory, etc. A storage device is a part of hardware like a
DVD drive, USB drive, in which the storage medium will be
inserted to be read and written.
Activity

Supposed that you need to exchange a large size

file for your friend. What type of storage media
would you use? Would you please list at least
three classes and explain why it is appropriate
to save large-size files?
Analysis

What do you think will be the

size of a typical hard drive of a
personal computer in the next
five years?
Analysis

What storage medium is helpful for

you in your studies?
Analysis

What storage medium is helpful for

businesses?
Abstraction
Storage System Components:
Storage Device
-DVD drive, flash memory card reader, etc.
-It is usually identified by a letter.
Storage Media
-DVD, flash memory, etc.
-Media inserted in the device are used.
 A storage device can be internal, external, or remote.
 Storage devices are nonvolatile.
 Logical File Representation
-User's view of the way data is saved or stored.
 File: program, document, or image
-They are stored on a storage medium.
 Filename: name labeled to a file by the user.
 Folder: a label that placed on a storage medium which files are stored

 Physical File Representation

The method by which data is physically saved or stored on a storage
medium and read by a computer.

Magnetic Disks
 Records data using magnetic spots on the disk.
 Disks are divided into sectors, clusters, and tracks.
 Data is written and read using read/write heads.
 Common Type:
 Hard Disks Hard Disk Drives (HDDs)
 A storage instrument consists of one or more metal magnetic
discs sealed permanently with an access system inside its
drive.
 Use one or more metal disks.
 Data is saved or stored magnetically.
 In Hard Disk Drives, disks were permanently sealed inside the
hard drive to avoid contamination and help the discs spin
faster.
Optical Discs
 Optical media like CDs and DVDs saves or stores data
optically using laser beams.
 Data will be permanently burned on the disc.
 Rewritable optical media can be rewritten or change
and erased.
 The standard-sized of this disc is 120mm, and the
smaller disc size is 80mm, called minis.
 CDs and DVDs use multiple layers and multiple sides to
increase capacity.
 Standard CDs hold 650MB up to 700MB.
 Standard DVDs hold 4.7GB for a single-layer disc and
8.5GB for a double-layer disc.
Recordable Discs

These recordable discs can be written but cannot be
reused again and erased data.
 Most common formats:
CD-R Discs: Recordable CD
DVD-R Discs: Recordable DVD

Rewritten Discs
 It can be written, recorded, erased, and reused.
 Most common formats:
 CD-RW
 DVD-RW
Flash Memory Systems
 Commonly found in the form of:
 Flash memory cards
 USB flash drives
 Solid-state drives
 Hybrid hard drives
 Digital cameras, digital music players, handheld PCs,
smartphones, notebook computers, and the like are small
storage devices.

Other Types of Storage Systems
 Remote storage
 It uses a storage device that is not directly part of
the PC being used.
 Examples of Remote Storage
 Network Storage
 It can be accessed using a local network.
 Online Storage
 It can be accessed using the Internet.
Smart Card
 A Credit card plastic size device that contains some
computer circuitry to be used as a storage device.
 Can store up to 64KB files.
A smart card is used to store prepaid amounts of digital
cash or personal information of a person.

Storage System for Large Computer Systems and Networks
 Large Computer Systems and Networks mostly use a
storage server.
 Storage Server
o It is a hardware device that contains multiple
high-speed hard drives.
 This is commonly used by businesses and companies
that have a large amount of data to be store .

Figure 7.4 Storage Server

Network Attached Storage (NAS)
 A high-performance storage server that is connected
to a network to provide storage for computers on the
web.

Figure 7.5 Network Attached Storage

Storage Area Network
• A collection of hard disks and other storage devices
that serves as storage for another computer network.

Factors to consider in evaluating a Storage Device
o Speed
o Compatibility
o Storage Capacity
o Convenience
o Portability

Most user requires:

o Hard Drive
o Solid-state Drive
o Online Storage
o Flash or USB Drive
Application

Why can CD-ROM discs not be erased or altered, and CD+RW

can be changed, rewritten, or erased?

List at least five advantages and disadvantages of using

online storage.
