Nelson Mandela organized a series
of non-violent strikes and boycotts.
Mandela rose up against apartheid and
called upon all South Africans to join
him. Mandela was fighting against
apartheid, but he was also fighting for
something: a better world, in which the
freedom, justice and dignity of all were
respected. Even before his release in
1990, Mandela began negotiating with
the government to end apartheid.
Through those negotiations he helped to
prevent a bloody civil war. Mandela
went on to become the country’s first
democratically elected president.
Mandela had been a prisoner for 27 years,
arrested in 1962 and convicted in 1964 of
conspiring to overthrow the state. He was
sentenced to life imprisonment For 18 of
those years, Mandela endured the harsh
conditions of Robben Island. By the late
1970s the almost invisible prisoner had
become a symbol of South African
oppression. During the 1980s ‘Free Nelson
Mandela’ became a worldwide campaign.
Although he was arrested and imprisoned
for 27 years for fighting for freedom,
Mandela refused to give up the struggle or
give in to hate.
In 1993, Mandela and President de Klerk
were awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for
their work towards abolishing apartheid. On
10 May 1994, Nelson Mandela, at the age
of 77, was inaugurated as South Africa’s
first black president and F W de Klerk
became Mandela’s first deputy. During his
presidency, Mandela also worked to protect
South Africa's economy from collapse.
