COSTS

The cost of installing a wind power plant depends on :-

❖ project size
❖ Location
❖ Turbine technology
❖ Site conditions
❖ Infrastructure requirements
❖ Government incentives

2
On the basis of location of plant

Onshore Wind Power Plant:

● Onshore wind power plants typically cost around $1.3 million to $2.2 million per megawatt
(MW) of installed capacity.

Offshore Wind Power Plant:

● Offshore wind installations tend to be more expensive due to the complexities of offshore
construction and maintenance.
● The cost can range from $3 million to $6 million per MW or more.

Specific Costs:
● Turbine costs can account for a significant portion of the overall project cost. onshore
turbine prices were roughly $800,000 to $1.5 million per MW, while offshore turbines

could be higher. 3
The operating and maintenance (O&M) costs of a wind power plant depend on various factors such as :-

Turbine Technology and Age:

● The type of wind turbine technology used and its age can affect maintenance
requirements and costs. Older turbines might require more frequent maintenance
and could have higher associated costs.

Location and Environmental Conditions:

● Wind turbines in harsh environments, such as offshore locations or areas with
extreme weather conditions, may experience higher wear and tear, necessitating
more frequent and intensive maintenance.

Access and Infrastructure:

● Remote locations may require more effort and resources for transportation and
logistics. 4
Size of the Wind Farm:
● Larger wind farms may benefit from economies of scale, allowing for more cost-
effective maintenance practices.

Monitoring and Predictive Maintenance:

● Advanced monitoring systems and predictive maintenance technologies can help
optimize maintenance schedules and reduce downtime. Investments in these
technologies may influence O&M costs.

Availability and Performance:

● The overall availability and performance of the wind turbines influence how often
maintenance is needed. Higher-performing turbines may require less frequent
maintenance.

INVESTMENT and RISK
in WIND ENERGY

11
Investment and Risk
❖ The economy of the United States and much of the western world is gradually
decarbonizing and is shifting towards renewable energy generation and wind energy
generation is one of the growing market.
❖ So investors across the globe are showing interest in wind energy market.
❖ Investors in wind power will expect a return on their investment and their expectation
increases when the risks are higher.
❖ There are significant risks in the electricity market .
❖ It is a capital intensive business and the assets are difficult to move. E.g, it is not
12
❖ The volatility in the energy price is a major deterrent(discouragement) in investment.
❖ Another big risk in electricity market is Regulatory risk.
❖ Regulators do have significant influence in the market and any weakness in the
regulatory framework would discourage the investment.
❖ As wind penetration rises ,the operational and networking constraints may require the
curtailment of wind power. For e.g at low load levels and at times of high wind production it
may be necessary for the system security reasons to curtail the amount of wind generation.

13
❖ Such curtailment is the potential source of risk if no financial compensation is received
for the lost revenue
❖ Compensation will only be paid in circumstances where the generator has firm access.
❖ Non firm access means no compensation.
❖ So to encourage investment in renewable generation like wind generation the
legislation should enact to give it priority access which is similar concept to that of
firm access.

The Future of Wind Energy

Wind power has become a major source of energy that has gained traction across
the world.

The future of wind power as a sustainable energy source. Wind energy is a

small but fast-growing fraction of electricity production. It accounts for
5 percent of global electricity production.

On a global scale, countries are in a race to build the infrastructure needed to capture
wind energy.

Technology advancements are expected to significantly impact the costs associated

with producing this type of renewable energy.

Experts estimate that technological advancements, among other factors, will help
reduce the cost of wind energy between 17% to 35% by 2035.

The cost of wind energy has plummeted over the past decade. In the U.S., it is
16
cost-competitive with natural gas and solar power.
Reasons behind Wind Power Still the Future of Green Energy:

1.Wind Power is cost effective

2.Low operating cost

3.Domestic Source of energy

4.Space efficient

5.Clean and Sustainable

6.Creates Jobs

The Future of Wind Energy In Nepal
The Solar and Wind Energy Resource Assessment (SWERA) project run by the Alternative
Energy Promotion Center (AEPC), provides a good overview on the wind resources
assessment on Nepal.

The potential area of wind power in the country is about 6074 sq. km with wind power density
greater than 300 watt/m2 . (SWERA, AEPC, CES-IOE, United Nations Environment Program/
Global Environment Facility (UNEP/GEF) in 2003.)

The commercially viable wind potential of the country is estimated to be only about 448 MW.

Nepal is planning to generate 20 MW wind power generation from Kathmandu Valley and the
surroundings hills.

AEPC has already invited AGA Middle East Pvt. Ltd Singapore/Hong Kong for detail feasibility
study for wind potential areas of Nepal. The company has proposed to install vertical axis wind
turbines and interested to invest for minimum 200 MW of wind energy 18
