DECODE THESE!
MOMENTUM I S 3. A
MASS IN MOTION
MOMENTUM
and
IMPULSE
OBJECTIVES:
At the end of the lesson, the learners should be
able to:
1. Identify factors that affect momentum;
2. solve problems involving momentum;
3. relate and describe momentum and impulse
to collision of objects, and
4. cite real-life examples of momentum and
impulse.
WHAT is MOMENTUM?
Momentum can simply be
defined as the mass in
motion. This tells us that
object at rest has no
momentum.
TWO QUANTITIES INVOLVE:
1. Mass
2. Velocity
These quantities are
directly proportional to
the magnitude of momentum.
WHAT DOES IT MEAN?
The momentum (p) of a body is
the product of its mass (m) and
its velocity (v)
p = mv
WHICH OF THE FOLLOWING
HAS GREATER MOMENTUM?
A. Passenger boat A travelling from
Lakandula Port with 35 passengers at a
velocity of 5m/s going to Brgy. Sani-
sani.
B. Passenger boat B travelling from
Lakandula Port with 45 passengers at a
velocity of 5m/s going to Brgy. Sani-
sani.

velocity of 5m/s going to Brgy. Sani-
sani.
B. Passenger boat B travelling from
Lakandula Port with 45 passengers at a
velocity of 5m/s going to Brgy. Sani-
sani.
LET’S EXPLAIN!
The two passenger boats
travel at the same velocity
but passenger boat B has more
passengers thus it has
greater mass and momentum.
Another Situation!
A. One Monday morning, Eric is riding a
motorcycle going to Placer National High
School from his home in Magsaysay
travelling at a velocity of 5 m/s.
B. After school, Eric rode a motorcycle
from school to his home in Magsaysay
travelling at a velocity of 10 m/s.

LET’S EXPLAIN!
The two motorcycle has the
same mass but motorcycle from
situation A has greater
velocity thus it has a
greater momentum.
p= mv

values.
STEP 1: Identify what is required
You are asked to calculate the
object’s momentum.
STEP 2: Identify the given
Mass= 200 kilograms
Velocity= 15 m/s
STEP 3: Write the working equation
p = mv
STEP 4: Substitute the given values
p = 3,000 kg•m/s
I= Ft= p= mv
LET’S INVESTIGATE!!!
Suppose you are riding a
bicycle going to school in
Placer National High School.
You came across a motorcycle
and you managed to avoid it
but you lose your balance. You
have two options to collide
with, a mango tree and a
banana stalk. What will you
choose? And why?
For instance, we want
to find the Force of the
impact:
Ft = mv
F = mv/t
Increasing the force results in the
increase in the change of momentum
and decrease in the time of impact.
Just like how the bananas stalk
increases the time of impact when the
bike collides to it resulting for the force
of impact to be lesser causing for the
collision to create less damage on the
bicycle.
Just like in the concept
of dropping an egg to
the floor and to the
pillow.
I= Ft= p
Direction: Read the following questions carefully. Choose the letter of
the correct answer.
1. Which has more momentum, a heavy truck moving at 30 m/h or a
light truck moving at 30 km/h?
a. Heavy truck b. Light truck
c. Both has the same momentum d. Cannot be
determined
2. Base on the force equation, what will happen to the force of impact
if the time of impact increases?
a. Force of impact remains the same
b. There will be no changes on the force
c. Force of impact will decrease
3. The impulse experienced by a body is equal to the change in its ___.
a. Velocity b. Kinetic Energy c. Momentum d. Potential energy
