Assignment 5
PHYSICS
4. What is the total momentum of the bullet and the gun before firing?
7. Explain why, it is easier to stop a tennis ball than a cricket ball moving with the same speed.
=The mass of a moving tennis ball is less than that of a cricket ball
moving at the same velocity.
8. State the relation between the momentum of a body and the force acting on it.
==It can be written as F = mass x change in velocity / time. In practical
terms, the momentum of an object increases when a force is acting upon
it, because the force is causing it to accelerate, and to have an increase in
velocity.

Assignment 5
==is momentum.
11. What will be the momentum of a body of mass 'm' which is moving with a velocity V?
==Momentum is the quantity of motion of a moving body, measured as a product of its mass
and velocity. momentum(p)=mass(m)×velocity(v)
12. A plastic ball and a clay ball of equal masses, travelling in the same direction with equal
speeds, strike against a vertical wall. From which ball does the wall receive a greater amount
of momentum? Why?
==The wall will receive equal momentum from both the balls because
both balls have equal mass and velocity.
13. Why are road accidents at high speeds very much worse than accidents at low speeds?
==The road accidents at high speeds involve much larger changes in
momentum in much smaller time. Therefore,forces developed (change in
momentum/time) are very huge resulting in disaster.
14. Calculate the momentum of a toy car of mass 200 g moving with a speed of 5 m/s
1) Mass of the toy car,
m=200 g=0.2 kg
Speed, v=5 m/s
Momentum,p=m×v
P=0.2×5=1 kg.m/s
15. What is the change in momentum of a car weighing 1500 kg when its speed increases from
36 km/hr to 72 km/hr uniformly?
==Mass of car: 1500kg
Velocity v1=36km/hr=10m/s
Momentum p1=1500×10=15000kg.m/s
Velocity v2=72km/hr=20m/s
Momentump2=1500×20=30000kg.m/s
Change in momentum =p2−p1=30000−15000=15000kg.m/s
16. Calculate the change in momentum of a body weighing 5 kg when its velocity decreases
from 20 m/s to 0.20 m/s.

Assignment 5
==Initial speed of the body u=20 m/s
Final speed of the body v=0.20 m/s
Thus change in momentum Δp=m(v−u)
∴ Δp=(5)(0.20−20)=−99 kg m/s
17. A man throws a ball weighing 500 g vertically upwards with a speed of 1 0 m/s.
(ii) What would be its momentum at the highest point of its flight?
==(i) Initial momentum is mu=0.5Kg×10m/s=5Kg−m/s
(ii) At highest point its velocity becomes zero so momentum will slo
be zero as momentum p=mass×velocity.
18. A body of mass 25 kg has a momentum of 125 kg.m/s. Calculate the velocity of the body.
==Mass of the body,m=25 kg
Momentum p=125 kg.m/s
p=m×v
Mass of the body, m=25kg
Momentum p=125kg.m/s,
p=m×v
v=mp=25125=5m/s
Velocity of the body is 5 m/s
