LEARNING INTENTION
• To describe the structure of the atom using the Bohr model
• To describe and observe movement of electrons between electron shells
• To write an aim/hypothesis or introduction for the flame test
Success Criteria
• I can draw the Bohr model of a given atom
• I can describe how electron shells are arranged and how the electrons move between
them
• I can write an aim/hypothesis of introduction for the flame test
FLAME TEST
Today we get to embrace the inner pyromaniac
Bohr's Model of the Atom
Bohr's model:
-electrons orbit the nucleus like planets
orbit the sun
5.3
ATOMIC SPECTRA
• When atoms absorb energy, electrons move into higher energy levels. These electrons then lose
energy by emitting light when they return to lower energy levels.
FLAME TESTS
• The energy that is released is a specific
amount of energy which relates to a
specific colour
• These colours are unique to that
element as each element has different
energy levels for its electron shells
WHAT IS THE EXPERIMENT?
• You will have 4 known samples and 1 unknown sample
• You will conduct a flame test for each sample and record the colour of the flame
• You will write a mini report on this experiment (Aim/hypothesis (introduction), results and
short discussion)
SAFETY
• Keep chemicals covered to prevent drying out
• Chemicals are irritants – but no gloves – wash hands and don’t touch face with hands that
aren’t washed
• Use tongs to handle pop sticks
• No chemicals down the drain
• Used pop sticks into tub at front of room (not in the bin!)
MATERIALS
• Bunsen burner
• Heatproof mat
• Matches
• Brass tongs
• Pop sticks left in beakers of metal salt solution overnight
• Metal salt solutions of: 1M Calcium nitrate, 1M Sodium chloride, 1M Potassium nitrate, 1M
Copper sulfate, Unknown sample
METHOD
1. Choose a station and light your Bunsen burner so that is on the yellow, safety flame.
2. Note the name of the metal salt you are about to test and have your results table ready.
3. Adjust the Bunsen burner flame to a hot, blue flame.
4. Using the brass tongs, pick up a pop stick and hold it in the edge of the hot part of the
flame.
5. Observe the colour of the flame as the metal salt vaporises.
6. Remove the pop stick before it starts to burn and place it in the container provided.
7. Adjust the Bunsen burner back to a yellow, safety flame.
8. Record your observations for that metal salt.
9. Move to a new station and repeat steps 1-6.
Complete the worksheet for
the flame test and pack up the
stations neatly
