Campus radio
Campus radio (also known as college radio,
university radio or student radio) is a type of radio
station that is run by the students of a college,
university or other educational institution.
Programming may be exclusively created or
produced by students, or may include program

Founded in 1960, the University of Hertfordshire's Campus Radio Hatfield (now Crush
Radio) was the UK's first student radio station, though it was a pirate radio station.

The UK Student Radio Association works on behalf of more than fifty UK-based member
radio stations to further their development, encourage and facilitate communication
between member radio stations and links to the commercial radio industry, and lobby for
the membership's interests on both a regional and national level. The association
organises and hosts the annual Student Radio Awards in conjunction with BBC Radio 1.
Student Radio Awards

The Student Radio Awards (SRAs) is an awards scheme celebrating talent within
the UK student radio industry, held annually since 1995 and supported by BBC Radio 1,
the ASRA and Global Radio. The awards are announced in a ceremony in November,
with past presenters including well-known radio personalities, such as Fearne
Cotton, Scott Mills, and Nick Grimshaw. The first awards took place at the University of
London Union. Due to the increased popularity of the event, the SRAs moved to The
indigO2 in London in 2008.
In 2008, the Kevin Greening Creativity Award was introduced to reward students that
had displayed new and innovative radio. The award is named in honour of Kevin
Greening, a former chair of the awards and presenter on Cambridge University Radio.
Digital radio in the United Kingdom

In the United Kingdom, the roll-out of digital radio has been proceeding since
engineering test transmissions were started by the BBC in 1990 followed by a public
launch in September 1995. The UK currently has one of the world's biggest digital radio
networks, with about 500 transmitters, three national DAB ensembles, one regional DAB
ensemble, 48 local DAB ensembles and an increasing number of small-scale DAB
ensembles broadcasting over 250 commercial and 34 BBC radio stations across the UK.
In London there are already more than 100 different digital stations available. In
addition to DAB and DAB+, radio stations are also broadcast on digital television
platform as well as internet radio in the UK. Digital radio ensemble operators and
stations need a broadcasting licence from the UK's media regulator Ofcom to broadcast.
Digital Audio Broadcasting

Experimental transmissions of the DAB Eureka 147 standard from the Crystal
Palace transmitting station by the BBC started in 1990 with permanent
transmissions covering London in September 1995. With the expansion of its
single-frequency network in the spring of 1998, the BBC national ensemble was
available to 65% of the UK population by 2001, 85% by 2004 and 96.4% by 2015.
DAB+ full-time broadcasts began in 2016.

The Broadcasting Act of 1996 allowed the introduction of national, regional and
local commercial ensembles in the United Kingdom.
WHEN WAS THE FIRST PUBLIC RADIO BROADCAST IN THE UK?
Britain’s first advertised live public broadcast took place on 15
June 1920, two years before the BBC's first programme, when the
famous Australian opera singer Dame Nellie Melba sang into
Chelmsford’s microphone, sponsored by the Daily Mail.This venture
into entertainment proved too much for the General Post Office
(GPO), which withdrew Marconi’s licence for broadcasting from
Chelmsford.The GPO’s clumsy intervention met with howls of
protest from the ‘radio hams’. Some 3300 of them signed a petition
calling for broadcasting to return.The GPO conceded, and in 1922
Marconi began to broadcast popular ent ertainment, often devised and presented by its own engineers, from its transmitter 2MT at Writtle, near Chelmsford.

WHEN WAS THE BBC FOUNDED?
1920 saw the beginnings of national radio broadcasting. Several
companies, including Marconi, combined to form the British Broadcasting
Committee.The GPO granted the Committee a monopoly on national
broadcasting in early November, and soon afterwards a new company, the
British Broadcasting Company, was established. It was funded partly by
licences levied by the GPO on radio sets.The London transmitter, 2LO, was
quickly networked to new transmitters in London, Manchester, Birmingham
and Newcastle.At the end of 1926 the BBC was nationalised and became the
British Broadcasting Corporation. John Reith, General Manager of the
former company, became the first Director General.Under his influence, the
BBC set out its mission to “inform, educate and entertain”. The reach of the
BBC expanded rapidly during its early years and in 1932 it inaugurated the
Empire Service. Later the World Service, it broadcast from 5XX in Daventry,
Northamptonshire and found a worldwide audience.
