Rational Number

Chapter 1
Defination:
• Rational number, note the word “RATIO” in the term rational, it remind us of
the word “Fraction”.
• A rational number is any number that can be written as a fraction, where both
the numerator (the top number) and the denominator (the bottom number) are
integers, and the denominator is not equal to zero.
• In other words, a rational number can be expressed as p/q, where p and q are
both integers and q ≠ 0.
Which fraction must be larger ?
For eg : Terminating
X= 1.375
It can be written as 1375/1000 i.e. 55/40= 11/8

Repeating :
X=0.333..... (1)
10x= 3.333.... (2)

(2)-(1) :
9x = 3
X = 1/3.
Which is a fraction so as a rational number.
Non Terminating : that never ends/terminate.
can you find deepest point of the ocean/sea ?
True/ False questions:

• Is integer is a rational number ?

• Is 0 is a rational number ?
• Can denominator be negative while comparing two fractions ?
• Is terminating decimal is a rational number ?
Irrational Number :

• Every non terminating and non repeating decimal number is known as irrational
number.
• For eg – 0.1010010001001.....
Positive and Negative Rational number:

Commutative Property - Interchange or switch the elements (order)
The example below shows commutative property for addition:
X+Y=Y+X
The word "commute" is defined as "to travel back and forth on a regular basis".

Sara had 4 red apples in her shopping cart. She met Ruth, who gave her 2
green apples. How many apples does Sara have at the end?
Distributive property:
Distribute 10 apples between two people such that each atleast gets two.

a=1 b=4
Ans: 2 (a+b)
Case 1 : a=1, b=4
Case 2 : a=2, b=3
Case 3 : a=3, b=2
Case 4 : a=4, b=1

2(a+b) = 2a+ 2b
a=2 b=3

a=3 b=2

a=4 b=1
Associative Property : regroup the elements (grouping)
The example below shows associative property for addition:
(X + Y) + Z = X + (Y + Z)
The word "associate" is defined as "to join as a partner, friend, or companion"

a + (b + c)

5 + (4 + 6) = 5 + 10 = 15

In a park, there were 5 fir trees and 4 pines. The gardener has planted
six more pines. How many trees are in the park now?
To bring new basketballs to a sports center, two trucks
have arrived with 10 boxes each. Inside each box, there
are 8 basketballs. How many basketballs have reached
the sports center?
Additive Identity : Multiplicative Identity :
Doesnt change at all.
Net operation = 0 Doesnt change the value after multiplying.

Example: Find additive identity of 2. EX.- Find multiplicative identity of 7 ?

Answer: 0 because 2+0 = 2. Ans.- 1 because 7*1=7.
Additive Inverse : Multiplicative Inverse :
Whatever the value, add & make it to 0. whatever the value, multiply and make it to 1.

Example: Find additive inverse of 2. EX.- Find multiplicative inverse of 7 ?

Answer: 2+(-2) = 0 Ans.- 7*(1/7) = 1.
So (-2) is the additive inverse for this. So (1/7) is the multiplicative inverse of this.

Representation of rational number on a number line :

Represent 3(2/7) on the number line ?

Represent 2.65 on a number line ?

Transposition : The act or process of changing something from one position to another, or of
exchanging the positions of two things.
Any term of an equation may be taken from one side to the other with a change in its sign. This does not
affect the equality of the statement.

+ =

5 kg 8 kg 13 kg

= -
Type 2 : Variable on both sides
Solve the equation: (x/3) + 1 = (2x/5) – 1, find x.
Arrange x terms (variable) on one side and numbers on other side,
(x/3) – (2x/5) = -1-1
Take L.C.M. Of 3 and 5 i.e. 15.
(5x/15)-(6x/15) = -2
-(x/15) = -2
X = 15*2
X = 30.
