Tamarind Seeds (Tamarindus Indica) as

a Bio – coagulant For Wastewater
Treatment

ACKGROUN  This study was conducted for the purpose of producing an affordable and
eco-friendly coagulant component for wastewater treatment and provides a
helping hand when it comes to solving water pollution related problems
and situations.

 Tamarind seeds (Tamarindus Indica) can be a help in finding solution for

this ongoing problem. This kind of seed is just like Malunggay seeds
(Moringa Oleifera) which can be used as a bio-coagulant because of its
similar properties with the Malunggay seeds.

 Bio - coagulants are components that can be used as an alternative solution

for environmental problems such as water pollution. Their parts are totally
organic and biodegradable; therefore, they are environmentally friendly
and have minimal impacts on human health according to SB Kurniawan
(2020).

2
STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM
1. What is the turbidity reading in NTU before and after adding the
tamarind seeds bio-coagulant with the following level of concentrations;
1.1 0.25 tbsp
1.2 0.50 tbsp
1.3 1.0 tbsp

2. Is there a significant difference between the turbidity reading in NTU of

the three levels of concentration of tamarind seeds?

3
▪ Null Hypothesis - The application of the
Tamarind seeds (Tamarindus Indica) as a bio -
coagulant doesn’t affect the turbidity of the
water samples.

▪ Alternate Hypothesis - The application of the
Tamarind seeds (Tamarindus Indica) as a bio -
coagulant affects the turbidity of the water

samples.

COLLECTION OF MATERIALS

Preparation of Tamarind seeds bio-coagulant:

• 30 pieces of Tamarind Seeds (Raw)
• 630 mL of polluted water (210 mL for each
sample)
• hammer
• Spoon
• Knife
• Improvised Turbidity Tube
6
COLLECTION OF MATERIALS
Preparation of Tamarind seeds bio-coagulant:

• Powdered tamarind seed amounting of

0.25 tbsp will mix in 210 mL wastewater 0.25 tbsp 0.50 tbsp 1.0 tbsp
for sample A, then another 0.50 tbsp of
powdered seed will mix in 210 mL
wastewater for sample B and 1.0 tbsp
powdered seed were then mixed with 210
mL wastewater for sample C. 210mL 210mL
• Gently stirring of each sample mixture 210mL

using spoon for about 5 minutes until it is

totally mixed. Sample A Sample B Sample C

7
TURBIDITY
TESTING
• Transfer the water sample to another container using the improvised tube and leave
it for 24hrs.
• A Do-It- Yourself turbidity tube that is made of drinking bottles of birds was used.
Since it is an improvised tube, we made the Secchi disc.

11
SUMMARY
“ Based on the summary of the results and discussion, there is a change in the
turbidity of the polluted water samples after applying the concentrated Tamarind seeds bio-
coagulant. Water sample C which is treated by a quarter (0.25) of tablespoon of tamarind
seeds was the highest NTU value and Water sample A which is treated by one (1.0)
tablespoon of tamarind seeds was the lowest NTU value. This implies that 1.0 tablespoon of
tamarind resulted in the cleanest water after the treatment. After statistical treatment it
rejected the null hypothesis that there was a significant difference between the NTU Level of
the water samples. We therefore conclude that the Tamarind Seeds can be used as a bio –
coagulant. Thus, the water concentration of 1 tablespoon of tamarind seed is more effective
than the other water samples.

12
RECOMMENDATION
“ With the completion of this study, the researchers believe
that there is still a need to further study the said topic.
The researchers recommend adding levels of
concentration to further identify the right concentration
of tamarind seeds for water waste treatment . Proper
preparation of tamarind seeds and laboratory testing are
also recommended for more accurate results of this study.
