History
The history of Sri Lanka is intertwined with the
history of the broader Indian subcontinent and
the surrounding regions, comprising the areas of
South Asia, Southeast Asia and Indian Ocean.
The early human remains found on the island of
Sri Lanka date to about 38,000 years ago.

Occupied by the Portuguese in the


16th century and by the Dutch in the
17th century, the island was ceded to
the British in 1796, became a crown
colony in 1802, and was united
under British rule by 1815. As
Ceylon, it became independent in
1948; its name was changed to Sri

Buddhism dominates (70% of the
population; 90% of Sinhalese)
Hinduism (15% of the population;
80% of Tamils), followed by Islam
(8%) and Catholic (7%, shared
between Sinhalese and Tamil
groups).

Sarong
Men in Sri Lanka usually wear a
sarong, and it is a long printed piece
of clothing that is worn by wrapping
it around the body, the article is one
of the most popular dresses in Sri
Lanka for most men here. In some
regions, men use a sarong with a
long sleeved shirt and straight
trousers, made of cotton fabric.

traditional attire for women of
South Asian descent and is
essentially a long piece of fabric
that is draped around the body.
It is usually worn together with a
short fitted blouse, known as a
choli, and a long petticoat.
