AHLI KUMPULAN:
Describe the similarities and differences of the Traditional Costume in Thailand and
Philippines.
The Filipino people greatly value the taste of art and culture. This is evidenced by the
existence of traditional clothing in the country which is quite well maintained. Whenever an
important party or celebration is held, men in the Philippines will wear embroidered outerwear
known as Barong Tagalog. The term barong itself is taken from the Filipino bahpsa "baro"
which means clothing. This special dress is made from a transparent material made from
banana stem fiber and pineapple fiber. In contrast to the fashion models worn by men, the
formal clothes worn by Filipino women are in the form of beautiful dresses that are commonly
called Maria Clara. The distinctive feature of this traditional dress lies in the design of the
sleeves that bulge high on both sides of the shoulders. Slain functions as a formal dress, Clara
Maria and Barong Tagalog dresses are also commonly worn as Carinosa dancer costumes.
Because many Filipinos imitated the dance, in subsequent developments the dancers were
allowed to wear other original dresses from the Tagalog region. Among them are kimona
patadyong and camisa de chino to express their love for Philippine culture.
Meanwhile, Thailand also has its own traditional clothing specialties. Thailand is a
royal country in Southeast Asia that has a modern capital, beautiful countryside, and a unique
culture. Good in terms of customs, beliefs, to style of dress. Despite getting a lot of influence
from western culture, but the Thai people who live in rural areas partly bear mash seta to move
traditional clothing. The most popular and most widely worn model of Thai traditional clothing
by local women has a very long and very tight size on the skirt. In the bear line, the clothing
consists of three main parts, namely the upper part which is called hua dosa, the middle part
(belly) which is called dosa tua, and the lower part (frill) which is called tin dosa. All these
parts are made of the same material although the colors and decorative patterns are different.
The influence of Buddhism, which is undeniably strong, also has a significant influence on the
dress style of Thai men and women. This can be seen by wearing Panong clothing which
consists of a piece of cloth that is wrapped from the lower part of the body and inserted in the
leg slit like dhoti cloth in India. In stark contrast to women's clothing styles in general, men in
Thailand prefer to wear casual pants and shirts made of cotton or silk clothing.
The men’s costume of Thailand and Phillipinnes have the same similarities. Both of
them have collar and button. It also has a long sleeve. These design also be made in loose
cutting. These traditional’s costume can be wear on their wedding days, special accasions and
graduation ceremonies.
The difference of traditional costume in Thailand and Philippines we can see through
their women costume pattern. On contrast, traditional costumes of Thai women is various in
design and colour which brings elegance and charm for Thai women. Promoted by Queen
Sirikit, until now, there have been eight official designs for Thai women's traditional dress:
Chakkri, Boromphiman, Siwalai, Chakkraphat, Chitlada, Ruean Ton, Amarin and Dusit.
Philippine traditional costume is Maria Clara Dress. Maria Clara’s dress was named after a
mestiza heroine of one of the novels of the Philippine National hero Dr. Jose Rizal. Its origin
was the national costume of Filipino women which is baro’t (shirt) saya (skirt). The Maria
Clara gown features a floor-length paneled skirt of silk or satin. So, we can see that the
traditional costume Thailand and Philippines have their own differences which is women
costume of Thailand have a variety of shirts compared to the Philippines who has only one
traditional shirt for women.
