SOCIAL CONTRADICTION

A social contradiction is just an inconsistent set

of social attitudes. This definition entails that
there exists a social agentive group who
maintains those inconsistent attitudes.
SOCIAL TENSION

Social tension refers to the strain or conflict that

arises within a society due to opposing interests,
beliefs, or values among different groups or
individuals.
SOCIAL TENSION
Social tension can manifest in various forms, such
as protests, discrimination, polarization, or even violence,
and it often reflects underlying societal issues that need to
be addressed for greater harmony and cohesion.
WHAT IS SOCIAL CONTRADICTIONS
AND TENSIONS?
The social contradictions and tensions are concepts and ideas
believed to disturb and be against the norms and standards of a
society. A good example of this is terrorism. The use of violence
against the government is highly considered socially wrong by the
society due to the turmoil it brings.
The following are some examples of
social contradictions and tensions
present in our society:
1.Inter-ethnic conflicts – a dispute between two or more
ethnic groups. The source of conflict may be over political,
economic, social, cultural, or territorial matters.
• e.g
• (a) Ethnic groups fighting over dominance in position in the
society.
• (b) Cultural discrimination against an ethnic group

2. Class struggle – the political conflict and economic hostility that occurs

among the social groups of society due to socio-economic rivalry.

• e.g. (a) Tension between the rich and poor that exists until now.

• (b) Direct violence such as wars for resources and cheap labor,

assassinations or revolution.

• (c ) Indirect violence such as deaths from poverty and starvation,

illness and unsafe working conditions

3. Armed conflicts – A political conflict in which armed
combat involves the armed forces of at least one state.
• e.g.
• (a) States resort to armed force to deal with conflicts.
• (b) Protracted armed violence occurring between governmental
authorities and organized armed groups.
• news people army’s
4. Terrorism – the deliberate use of violence in a community
to establish a general atmosphere of fear and thus to achieve
a clear political goal.
• e.g. (a) Hijackings, hostage takings, kidnappings, mass shootings,

car bombings, and, frequently, suicide bombings

TERRORISM
5. Protest – A statement or action expressing disapproval of or
opposition to something.
• e.g. (a) Rally against a workplace to show your disapproval for
their bad labor practices.
• (b) People Power Revolution
PROTEST
6. Gender Issues - include all aspects and concerns related to women’s
and men’s lives and situation in society, to the way they interrelate,
their differences in access to and use of resources, their activities, and
how they react to changes, interventions and policies.
• e.g. (a) Difference in Political representation.
• (b) Stereotypes the capabilities due to gender.
GENDER ISSUES
These social contradictions and tension disrupts order
and norms in a society, therefore, it may also give rise
to different changes in our society in terms of
• Social
Changes in human interactions and interrelations may occur. Because
of the conflict that these social contradictions and tensions make, people may
start to build walls or gaps with other people (trust issues). An example is the
case with class struggle, because of the growing conflict between different
classes, a different impression will always be visible to one side about the
other, where distrust for the other is shown, therefore, resulting to disunity
within our society.
• Political
Social contradictions and tensions may cause significant disruption
in a government and destroy balance between the government and the
citizens. One great example is terrorism, terrorists will continue to oppose
the government, and disrupt society, creating disturbance within the
government and gaining the lack of trust by the citizens and will eventually
result to the government officials losing their credibility.
• Cultural

Acculturation will highly occur due to these social contradictions and tensions. To

avoid judgements and misunderstandings, some cultures are forced to adjust in the

method of living the members of society partakes in. For instance, with the inter-ethnic

conflicts, some will choose to hide their culture identity in order for them to not be

discriminated and to avoid any other dispute with the dominating ethnic group. Those

minorities will adapt to the society and change their mode of living and lifestyle, causing

their original culture to falter and be influenced
