Everybody talks about physical fitness but still there are many misconceptions about the real meaning of the
word. Some believe that being “physically fit” means being muscular and being able to lift heavy weights.
Others believe that to be fit is to be perceived as slim. To some others, being physically fit is being able to endure the
physical demands of daily living. It is therefore necessary to have correct concept of physical fitness.
Physical fitness is a multidimensional state of being
It is the body’s ability to function efficiently and effectively. It is a state of being that consists of at least five health-
related physical fitness and six skill-related physical fitness components, each of which contributes to total quality of life.
Physical fitness is associated with a person’s ability to work effectively, enjoy leisure time, be healthy, resist
hypokinetic diseases (hypokinetic diseases or conditions - is one associated with lack of physical activity or too little
regular exercise).
Examples of such conditions include (heart disease, low back pain, adult-onset diabetes, and obesity) and meet
emergency situations. It is related to, but different from, health and wellness. Although the development of
physical fitness is the result of many things, optimal physical fitness is not possible without regular exercise.
Facts about hyperkinetic and hypokinetic conditions.
Just as too little physical activity can result in health problems, too much can slow contribute to illness and injury.
The difference between the two, “hypokinetic” means too little physical activity while “hyperkenetic” means too
much physical activity. Just as reasonable amounts of physical activity can help reduce the risk of hypokinetic
health problems; it has become apparent that excessive leads to hyperkinetic conditions that have negative effects
on health and wellness. High level performance requires high-level-training.
In general, Physical Fitness is the ability of the body to perform one’s daily tasks efficiently without undue fatigue
Muscles are basic for all body action. They increase in strength with activity and deteriorate from lack of it. Fit
muscles use less energy to perform the same tasks, leading to an increase in vitality.
2. Posture
A physically fir person is able to maintain his general posture alignment better than one with weak musculature.
Good fitness as a program stresses the development of anti-gravity muscles which maintains good abdominal wall
and the arm and shoulder girdle.
Benefits of Physical Fitness
3. Relieves low back pain
A lack of physical activity has been found to be the major cause for some cases of pain in the lower back. Most
adults who suffer from low-back pain are relieved from this pain by exercises that strengthen their back and
abdominal muscles
.
