Canada has the 11th largest economy in the world, it is one of the wealthiest nations, and is a member of
ORGANIZTION FOR ECONOMIC CO-OPERATION AND DEVELOPMENT (OECD).

 As with other developed nations, the Canadian economy is dominated by

the service industry, which employs about three quarters of Canadians.

 Canada also has sizeable manufacturing sector of automobile and aircraft

industry in central Canada.

 Canada is 8th largest commercial seafood and fishing industry in the world

and is one of the global leader of entertainment software industry.

Eating Habits
 Eating while walking is not acceptable.

 Elbows should never be on the table when eating.

 Politely refusing food in Canada is unlikely to cause offense.

 After finishing a meal, eating utensils should be placed on the plate.

 Punctuality is important, but arriving 15 min late for dinner is acceptable.

 15% tips are expected at restaurants and often are not included in the bill unless you have a large party.

 In Canada, many people eat with the fork in the left hand and the knife in the right hand for foods that require cutting.

 Canadians usually have the standard 3 meals a day and sometimes may have tea, coffee in the afternoon or a snack break at work.
Social Norms
• It’s normal in Canada for people who don’t know you to greet you with “Hi” or “Hello” while

walking down the street.

• It’s considered rude to speak in a foreign language in the presence of others who do not

understand what is being said.

• Most Canadians only allow guests in rooms of their home that they have designated as public or

guest rooms.

• Many Canadians are non-smokers & do not allow smoking in their vehicles or homes.

• A line is formed when several people are waiting for something, like at a coffee shop. Lines are

first come first serve. It is considered very rude to cut in.

• Bargaining is not a common practice in Canada other than for things like buying a house, car, or

dealing with a private seller.


Health Care System of Canada

Political System of Canada

 Federal Government is responsible for the things that affects the whole

country, such as citizenship and immigration, National Defense and trade

with other countries.

 Municipal (Local, City) governments are responsible for firefighting, city

streets and other local matters. If there is no local government, The

Province provides services.

 Provincial and territorial governments are responsible for such things like

education, healthcare , and highways.


Rights and Freedom in Canada
• The elected government cannot hold power forever.

• Everyone in Canada is free to practice any religion or no religion at all.

• Canadian citizens have the right to enter, remain in, or leave the country.

• The charter also protects the basic human rights of life, i.e Security of the person

• No one can be deprived of these rights except through fair legal procedures and based on clear, fair laws.

• Canadian citizen or permanent residents have the rights to live or seek work anywhere in Canada. Government in Canada
cannot discriminate on the basis of someone’s current or previous region of residence. For example if a person is a qualified
professional, such as an accountant, in one province, another province cannot prevent him or her from working there because
that person does not live there.

• Every Canadian citizen has a right to vote in election for members of the parliament and representatives in provincial and
territorial Senate.
