Nonelyn Cesista Group 2 Discussant LAB. 1: Narrative Report on Developing Latent Print Using Black Ink on the Right and Left Hand Laboratory!
The moment that I heard this word from my
teacher—that after the midterm exam we will face another chapter of erudition that will enhance and boost our learning in fingerprinting—I felt myriads of emotions, knowing that this activity will be one of the means that will determine our journey in this subject. This first laboratory becomes our foundation because we are supposed to find a partner with whom we will be comfortable and never ashamed as we perform the various activities. From this, before we executed the first laboratory, we discussed the proper procedure and the functions of the things that we are utilizing, as well as the instances that we need to avoid while performing our first laboratory. This discussion with our subject teacher becomes critical on our part because, as first- timers in the laboratory of fingerprinting, we should be careful and informed about our actions so that we can avoid wasting the materials. In line with this, we learned that the equipment needed is the following: a fingerprint ink roller, fingerprint ink, a cardholder and table, a glass slab or inking plate, a slab and roller cleaner, and hand cleaning materials. Apart from that, before doing the activity we are also notified about the rules to observe in taking legible fingerprint such as the cleanliness of equipment/washing of hands before fingerprinting, the right kind and correct amount of ink, proper distribution of ink on the glass slab, the subject's hands must be relaxed, proper distance of the subject from the glass slab/proper alignment, even pressure to be applied, the fingers must be rolled from one side to the other, the inking and printing must reach the first joint of the finger, the thumb must be rolled towards the body and the other fingers away from the subject's body, the subject's fingers must be controlled to prevent twisting, and speed of the rolling finger. With this, after the comprehensive discussion, we proceed to the proper laboratory, wherein we first write down on the bond paper the important details that we need to accomplish in getting the fingerprints of the right and left fingers. After that, we wore the laboratory gown as we are the second in line to do the fingerprinting, and it was a mixed emotion knowing that we will be graded on this task, which should be as faultless as possible. After the simultaneous procedure that we did with my partner and ensuring that we efficiently and effectively placed the fingerprint on paper, we washed our hands with the handwashing soap to eliminate the fingerprint ink. Moreover, the first laboratory is not only limited to putting the latent print on paper; after doing that, we are tasked with identifying what kinds of patterns our subject has on all their fingers, as well as opting to locate the delta and core of each fingerprint. In line with this, we also did the ridge tracing and ridge counting of all the patterns, and it was a job- sharing arrangement between my partner and me because we needed to be critical in counting and tracing to avoid errors in identifying the fingerprint of our subject. In this portion of the activity, we invest a lot of time and apply the trial-and-error method so that we can get the exact number of ridges. On the other hand, for my part, I was also challenged because the ridges of my subject are very tiny, which is why I needed to make another extra effort in counting and tracing her ridges. In addition, the following major divisions in fingerprint classifications are: primary classification, secondary classification, sub-secondary classification, major division, final classification, and key classification. Wherein the classification formula is in fractions for. Like mathematics, classification has a numerator and denominator expressed in numerical values and variables. Apart from that, classification is also paramount in order to have a transparent understanding of the nature of the fingerprint. All in all, this first laboratory activity helped me broaden my horizons in understanding the paramount use of fingerprints in all aspects of our lives. It helps me to ponder the fact that learning this subject requires effort, action, and patience in order to succeed in identifying what kind of fingerprint there is and its classification. In addendum, this activity helps me to build camaraderie because in doing this task, you must have a collaborative effort with your partner because if you have a distinct agenda in finishing this task, surely you will never create a positive environment, and worst of all, there will be no foundation of learning and understanding. Our Final Output in Laboratory 1 LAB. 2: Narrative Report on Identifying the latent print of our classmate using Black Ink on the Right Hand Tuesday, 7th of March, we conducted another laboratory wherein we used the same materials that we used in our first laboratory, a bond paper, fingerprint black ink, magnifying glass, ink roller, and glass slab. Before starting the laboratory, our professor comprehensively discussed to us what we would do in this activity. Thereafter, my partner and I went in front of the table and started the activity wherein all we have to do was to develop the palm print of each other, and so we did. We did the same process just like in our first laboratory wherein we equally distributed the fingerprint black ink using an ink roller in order to avoid unevenness of the ink the would stick on our ridges, and slightly put my right hand on the glass slab and gently pressed each finger and the back of the palm. Mark Angelo, my partner guided and helped me with developing my palm print and I did the same to him. After we successfully developed each other’s palm prints, it was submitted to our Professor, Ma’am Leliosa. After all of use developed our palm prints, Ma’am Leliosa comprehensively discussed the next step we must done, it was to get one palm print on the table which were mixed with all the developed palm prints of our classmates. After acquiring one, we have to identify the patterns, to locate the core and delta, to count the ridges, and to determine whose palm print we acquired. Once I got a palm print, I immediately started the task. I started first with counting the ridges, but since there were only two magnifying glasses, I have to identify first the patterns so I wouldn’t waste time waiting my turn of using the magnifying glass since someone was already using it. I attentively identified the patterns of each fingers because I think it is very important, most especially that there was a finger whereby not completely fingerprinted, therefore it got me confused. When I got my turn to use the magnifying glass, I focused on locating the core and delta and counting the ridges. I have to be very careful in doing those because I might count the ridges and locate the core and delta incorrectly. It was not easy, it made my eyes hurt and made my head dizzy. The ridges were not too compressed but counting it could still cause dizziness, but I have to keep going because someone has to use the magnifying glass. Patience is a must in doing this activity, especially when you couldn’t find the delta, and counting the ridges correctly. After repeatedly checking if I got it correctly already, I started determining whose palm print was it. Doing it was a challenging experienced, we’re almost forty-five in our section and I have to check all of them. Luckily, despite of being busy in their own task, they still cooperate. I was able to determine the owner of the palm print I got. In conclusion, the activity we carried out was challenging. Being able to performed this was I think a great experience for a reason that we aspire to become law enforcement officers. We are gaining more familiarity with the patterns, ridge counting, and identification of core and delta. This is augmenting our proficiency in fingerprint analysis. In this day, I realized that determining the owner of a fingerprint is not easy. The fact that fingerprints will not always appears clearly, will surely make it difficult for the investigator to identify its possessor. Our Final Output in Laboratory 2 LAB. 3: Narrative Report on Developing latent prints using DIY Black Powder on the Right Thumb We touch things every day—a coffee cup, a car door, a computer keyboard. Each time we do, it is likely that we leave behind our unique signature—in our fingerprints. No two people have the same fingerprints. Even identical twins with identical DNA have different fingerprints. This uniqueness allows fingerprints to be used in all sorts of ways, including for background checks, biometric security, mass disaster identification, and, of course, in criminal situations. Fingerprint analysis has been used to identify suspects and solve crimes for more than 100 years, and it remains an extremely valuable tool for law enforcement. One of the most important uses for fingerprints is to help investigators link one crime scene to another involving the same person. Fingerprint identification also helps investigators track a criminal’s record, including their previous arrests and convictions, to aid in sentencing, probation, parole, and pardoning decisions which are some of the underlying reason of our third laboratory. April 4, 2023, marks another milestone in my journey as a criminology student because it is our third laboratory, wherein we will be given the chance again to strengthen our learning about this subject matter. This is also the laboratory that will measure our creativity, resourcefulness, and neatness, which will truly enhance our personalities. It is an activity that will not merely offer experience, yet it requires camaraderie and unity between your partner because doing this must be anchored with the two people having the same shared goal, which is to finish the activity with some respect and discipline. Furthermore, before we enter the laboratory room, we are reminded by our subject teacher to bring the critical material that we will be utilizing as we perform our third activity. Some of the materials that we bring include the following: 1 big-size candle, 1 lighter or match, 1 knife (use for instructional purposes), 1 potholder, 1 small transparent container (a cup with cover), bond paper, surgical gloves, glass, lifting tape (transparent tape 1"), scissors, lab gown. Concerning the mentioned materials, we are puzzled about what activity we are accomplishing today because of our notion that we are entering an unpredicted activity because we brought a knife, which captivates our attention. With this curiosity, we started our activity at exactly 9:15 in the morning, and we were deemed to listen first to the procedure that we needed to follow to have a better outcome of the activity. That is why it was reiterated by our subject teacher that first we need to assure that we have the laboratory gown and materials that she mentioned in the group chat. Second, we must ensure that the place where we are going to work is safe and comfortable for the two of you and your partner. Third, we lit the candles using the matches, and the most captivating is that we are going to make a black powder using the existing heat of the candle as black powder, and I must say that it was a one-of-a-kind technique that we did. Fourth, we opt to place the knife near the flame of the candle so that we can have an ample amount of black flame. After getting the black powder from the candle, we are going to place it in the container, which requires patience and courage. Meanwhile, as we do the activity together with my partner, Nonelyn Cesista, I get the brilliant thought to search for another material that is much bigger than the knife; that is why I find metal outside the room, and the moment I find the piece of metal, we use it as another resource for black powder, and it is an effective technique. With this, as I notice in the classroom, we are the fastest partners who make the DIY powder or soots. Moreover, we are also reminded by our teacher that we need to be careful not to leave at least a small amount of sweat in the container because we might repeat the procedure. After all, it will never be used again. In line with this, I and my partner were reminded by our teacher that we can now proceed to the next activity, which is to get the fingerprint of the right thumb of the hand. Aside from that, our neighbor’s group asked if it was okay to put charcoal powder apart from the DIY powder that we gather on the candle, and our teacher agreed about this matter. That is why we put a little amount of charcoal powder in our container. Before we start the next phase of activity, we first assure that the surroundings are clean, and after that, we start already. In this third laboratory, we have a vice-versa relationship with each other in the sense that if I were the technician, Nonelyn Cesista would be my subject, so to speak in her part. Ergo, I become the subject first, and I hold the drinking glass. After that, we simultaneously do the activity, and we put the DIY powder on it so that the fingerprint will become visible. With that, we did the activity efficiently and effectively by lifting the fingerprint from the lifting tape and putting it on the piece of bond paper. In addition, before we did the next step of the activity, we cleaned the surroundings again before we created the information data wherein we would put or attach the right thumb fingerprint of our subject. After making the information data, we cut the fingerprint into a size that is suitable for the intended space of our information data. In addendum, as we witness, we are the fastest group in our section to accomplish the third activity. On the other hand, after we assured that everything is at its momentum we already pass our activity to our subject teacher, and we got one of the highest grades. With all of these, this third laboratory is one of the great activities that surely measures our patience and attitude. Getting a good grade should not only take effort but also action and perseverance so that you can ace the activity. In that sense, I was glad that my partner and I shared similar values in achieving this laboratory. In this instance, I will use it as another inspiration so that I can wade into the truest reality of the journey and make this a benchmark to always give my maximum level of performance in making this future reliable. Our Final Output in Laboratory 3 LAB. 4: Narrative Report on Developing latent prints using DIY Black Powder and Cornstarch on the Right Hand Camaraderie. Patience. Willingness. These three words became my guiding factor in wading into our fourth laboratory. These phrases also become my observations as we undergo the activity in the sense that it truly manifests the saying "two heads are better than one," wherein this fourth laboratory presents the implication of being united in finishing the task. It gives us the picture that if we collaborate on our ideas and skills, surely, we will be able to surpass the challenge and hurdle, and that is what we do. The moment that our subject teacher announced that we would be having another laboratory using DIY powder with cornstarch, we were all excited because it was another contemporary discovery. With this, at exactly 9:00 in the morning, we started doing our task through the instructions of our subject teacher to find a place wherein we would become comfortable as well as smooth so that we could perfectly do our task. Through this, we decided, together with my classmates, to do the laboratory outside the classroom. We find a cabinet that has a smooth surface so that we can thoroughly follow the instructions given. Since we already have the materials from the previous laboratory, what we opt to do in this laboratory is put our right hand on the smooth surface and put some fingerprint powder with cornstarch on it. Concerning this, I was first the subject, and my technician is Mr. Mark Angelo P. Aquino. We do this not only with our own will and knowledge but also with the help of our neighboring group and their brilliant idea. It was mesmerizing and enthralling when you had a consensus between the activity and your passion and dedication. After putting the powder on, we lay the tape on a smooth surface where the fingerprint of the subject is visible, and the only thing that we need to do is be careful because one wrong move could tarnish the entire procedure. I am indebted because I achieved a pleasant result. Aside from that, I lifted the tape with the help of my partner and put it on colored paper where the color would be accentuated. Moreover, I think sometime in our activity we are also tested by the myriads of circumstances to examine our patience. For this reason, when I was already the technician of my partner we repeated putting my fingerprint on the surface many times because of the various circumstances. Apart from that, when the time comes to finish putting the tape on the fingerprint on the surface, another problem is the lifting, which consumes time. In that instance, I must say that forbearance should prevail because if you don’t have that aptitude, surely you will have a misunderstanding with your partner that might lead to not perfectly finishing the activity. Despite the many trial-and- error methods, I still cling to the silver lining and keep motivating my partner that he can do it, and that is the power of trusting your partner. Ergo, since we need to hit the deadline, we need to make the extra effort and make our work faster but surely. Nevertheless, the activity was perfectly done with my partner and my classmate. We passed our output-on time, and I must say that we aced this activity. In addition, I foresee in this fourth laboratory that willingness should always illuminate everyone's actions because if you have it, surely you can do it despite how hard the task is. Furthermore, after checking, we are also tasked with ensuring that the fourth laboratory will continue at the next meeting because we will cut in the shape of our hand and label its classification and pattern. Further, in the next meeting, we rigidly finish the activity, and we put our dedication into finishing the task. We become the mirror of creativity because, after classifying and identifying the pattern of the right hand, we will label it so that it will become informative to the readers. Wherein, in this task, I found it intriguing knowing that we are not only stumbling in one course but also having the intervention. After that, we laminated our activity as the last procedure that we needed to do. On a final note, this laboratory gives us the chance to measure how understanding is imperative in every situation. It tightened that successful activity will not only rely on the output but should also manifest in the relationship with your partner. With all of these, the laboratory taught me that learning should always be accompanied by heart and discipline, as they will help you in conquer the target faultlessly. Our Final Output in Laboratory 4 LAB. 5: Narrative Report on Developing latent prints using Iodine Fuming Amazed. Captivated. Enlighted. These words are some of the best descriptions that I felt the moment that I learned that we were opting to do another laboratory activity, which is the iodine fuming fingerprint technique. For a reason, it was a roller coaster of emotions on my part because it’s a new journey wherein I will hone my knowledge about fingerprints. Meanwhile, I am doubtful the moment that I read the instructions in the group chat because I don’t have any other clues about what I need to do so that I can perfectly finish this activity. Furthermore, the said laboratory also required our section to bring bond paper, transparent plastic where the paper will be suitable enough, a pair of scissors, and a big clear plastic container with a lid. However, despite that, I have second thoughts and overthink whether I can ace or gain a piece of knowledge in our laboratory. I still believe in my counter- emotion that drives me to take my promising action, which I am also thrilled to uplift and exhibit my unsurpassed performance. With this, the moment that I read the information about the activity that we are going to do, I was astonished because iodine fuming is one of the oldest forensic techniques used to develop latent fingerprints, but it is also one of the easiest. In this activity, we are expected to learn how to make substantial evidence that, despite being a deeply rooted technique, it is still imperative to the foundation of personal identification. In line with this, at exactly 9:28 in the morning, Ma’am Leliosa, our subject teacher in the said subject, started the activity; however, because of the scars of the iodine crystal, one pair among our section will be the representative to do the task. That is why me and my partner, Ms. Nonelyn Cesista, ended up being the representatives. That is why it is another superfluous challenge on our part that we are going to face because we will become the highlight of the elucidation of the laboratory. Through this, we started doing the laboratory by utilizing the materials with the guidance of our subject teacher and following the step-by-step procedure wherein I first wore the surgical glove as protection from the iodine crystals. After that, we followed religiously the procedure stated in the reference, in which I cut first the small piece of paper, approximately 4"x4". Second, I put my partner's right hand in the paper and applied precise pressure so that even if the chemical was applied, it would have a pleasant effect. Third, I bend down the stick containing the chemical and use the picker to remove the lid of the stick and spread it on the paper, which results in developing the latent print in just a second. Fourth, we begin to see the violet-colored fumes that are starting to appear in the paper. Lastly, after several minutes, the iodine fumes adhered to the amino acids in the fingerprint secretions of my partner, leaving clear, brown fingerprints that were not previously visible. Moreover, as we performed the activity together with my partner, our classmate also documented the procedure that we were executing so that they would be informed about the whole process of the laboratory. In addition, after they captured pictures, the remaining iodize crystals were placed in the container, and I simultaneously followed the procedure with my classmates and our subject teacher, allowing the subject to take part in shaking the container as a means of having experience and intervention in the activity. With all the know-how, I learned that in developing latent prints with iodine, a long-used method, iodine crystals give off vapors with the intervention of the sublimations that physically absorb the oily substances of a fingerprint. The brown prints that are developed with iodine are not permanent. In addendum, the iodine fuming technique can be used on both porous and non-porous surfaces, and it works best on fresh prints. On the other hand, I also observed that iodine fumes are toxic and also strongly corrosive, which is why it is imperative that in the laboratory, safety measures be followed to avoid any kind of unprecedented occurrence. Our Final Output in Laboratory 5 Thank You!
