Metallic Bonding
Objectives
*describe metals as a lattice of positive ions in a ‘sea
of electrons’
*relate the malleability of metals to their structure
and the electrical conductivity of metals to the
mobility of the electrons in the structure
Metallic Bonding
The arrangement of metal atoms are described by
electron sea model.
It demonstrates that, the metal positive ions are held
together by a sea of electrons.
Labelling is a must!!!

Draw the metallic structure of Aluminium metal
Physical properties of
Metals
Good conductors of electricity:
The electrons lost by metal atoms are delocalised and free
to move.
Therefore they carry charge to conducts electricity
Malleability and ductility
The ability of metal atoms to slide over each other without
breaking.
Malleable: able to press into sheets
Ductile: can be pulled or drawn into wires
High melting point and boiling point
The electrostatic force between metal cations and sea of
electrons is very strong (stronger in transition metals)
