SOCIETY & CULTURE

FROM THE
PERSPECTIVES OF
ANTHROPOLOGY &
SOCIOLOGY
SOCIOLOGY
• It is the science that
deals with the study of
society and the social
interactions taking place
therein.
•Latin words
“socius”
(companion) and
“ logos” (study)
•Thus , sociology is
the study of
association, group,
society, & social
interaction.
•Sociology leans
on
contemporary
social life
ANTHROPOLOGY
• Anthropology is focused
on man as an animal & as
living in society, his origin
& development,
distribution, social habits
& culture.
IN
ANTHROPOLOGY,
CULTURE MEANS
IT INCLUDES ALL THINGS INDIVIDUALS
LEARN WHILE GROWING UP AMONG
PARTICULAR GROUP: ATTITUDES,
STANDARDS OF MORALITY, RULES OF
ETIQUETTE, PERCEPTIONS OF REALITY,
LANGUAGE, NOTIONS ABOUT THE
PROPER WAY OF LIFE, BELIEFS ABOUT
HOW FEMALES AND MALES SHOULD
INTERACT, IDEAS ABOUT HOW THE
WORLD WORKS AND SO FORTH.
• WE ARE HARDLY EVEN
AWARE THAT WE HAVE
LEARNED IT OR THAT
NOT EVERYONE IN THE
WORLD HAS LEARNED
IT.
• THERE IS NO ELITE OR
POPULAR CULTURE.
• THERE IS NO BETTER
OR WORSE CULTURE.
CULTURE IS…
• IS LEARNED FROM OTHER PEOPLE
WHILE GROWING UP IN A
PARTICULAR SOCIETY OR GROUP;
• IS WIDELY SHARED BY THE
MEMBERS OF THAT SOCIETY OR
GROUP;
• SO PROFOUNDLY AFFECTS THE
THOUGHTS, ACTIONS, & FEELINGS OF
PEOPLE IN THAT GROUP THAT
ANTHROPOLOGISTS SAY, “ INDIVIDUALS
ARE A PRODUCT OF THEIR CULTURE” &
“LEARNING A CULTURE IS AN ESSENTIAL
PART OF HUMAN DEVELOPMENT” AND;
• IN LARGE PART ACCOUNTS FOR THE
DIFFERENCES BETWEEN GROUPS OF
PEOPLE IN HOW THEY ACT, THINK, &
FEEL.
IN SOCIOLOGY,
• CULTURE IS THE PERSPECTIVE
PEOPLE COME TO SHARE AS THEY
INTERACT. IT INCLUDES EVERYTHING
TANGIBLE AND INTANGIBLE THAT
PEOPLE CREATE, ACQUIRE FROM
OTHER SOCIETIES AND TRANSMIT TO
SUBSEQUENT GENERATIONS.
• CULTURE COMPRISES
THINGS THAT PEOPLE
HAVE, THE THINGS THAT
THEY DO AND WHAT
THEY THINK.
• SOCIETY IS A GROUP OF
PEOPLE LIVING IN A GIVEN
TERRITORY WHO SHARE A
CULTURE AND WHO
INTERACT WITH PEOPLE
OF THAT TERRITORY MORE
THAN WITH PEOPLE OF
OTHER ERRITORIES.
