Introduction
An aliphatic compound or aliphatic hydrocarbon is an organic compound containing hydrogen and
carbon atoms that are usually linked together in chains via single, double or triple bond.
4
ABOUT ALKANES
Alkanes are aliphatic hydrocarbons with only single covalent bonds.
5
USES OF ALKANES
1. Fuel cells
2. Plastic products (from cracking of ethane, propane)
3. Fertilizer (in Haber-Bosch process for production of ammonia, hydrogen comes from methane)
4. Motor fuel [used as compressed natural gas (CNG) or liquefied natural gas (LNG) less pollution and
cheaper]
5. Renewable diesel as opposed to petrodiesel is produced from renewable resources such as vegetable
oil, fat under elevated temperature, pressure and in the presence of catalyst. It is also known as green
diesel because it does not contain sulfur and other toxic materials. Renewable diesel can contain alkanes of
9-18 carbon atoms.
6
ABOUT ALKENES
Alkenes are hydrocarbons that contain at least one C–C double bond.
7
USES OF ALKENES
1. Manufacture of plastics like polythene for making buckets, bowls, bags etc.
2. Manufacture of polystyrene used in making car battery cases and parts of the refrigerator
3. Making ethane-1,2-diol used as anti-freezing for motor car radiators
4. Manufacture of plastic, polypropene for making ropes and packaging material.
8
ABOUT ALKYNES
Alkynes are hydrocarbons that contain a C–C triple bond.
9
USES OF ALKYNES
1. The most common use of Ethyne is for making organic compounds like ethanol, ethanoic acid, acrylic
acid, etc.
2. It is also used for making polymers and it is a precursor. For instance, vinyl chloride is used as the
starting material for PVC and chloroprene is used for synthetic rubber neoprene.
3. Ethyne is used for preparing many organic solvents.
4. Alkynes are commonly used to artificially ripe fruits.
10
EFFECT OF HYDROCARBONS ON
MAHARASHTRA
1. To undertake a total appraisal of Indian sedimentary basins for tapping the hydrocarbon
potential and to optimise production of crude oil and natural gas in the most efficient
manner.
2. To keep pace with technological advancement and application and be at the
technological forefront in the global exploration and production industry.
3. To achieve as near as zero impact, as possible, on environment.
11
EFFECT OF HYDROCARBONS ON
ODISHA
1. Last year, the government announced that it would expect the area it can offer to
hydrocarbon exploration to double to 300,000 square kilometres.
2. To enhance quality of life by progressively improving product standards to ensure a
cleaner and greener India.
3. To assure energy security by achieving self-reliance through increased indigenous
production and investment in equity oil abroad.
12
EFFECT OF HYDROCARBONS ON WEST
BENGAL
1. To develop hydrocarbon sector as a globally competitive industry which could be
benchmarked against the best in the world through technology upgradation and capacity
building in all facets of the industry.
2. To ensure oil security for the country keeping in view strategic and defence
considerations.
3. It encouraged the use of natural gas, which is relatively a clean fuel.
