A RECTANGULAR PRISM
In this lesson, you can find the volume of a given cube and a
rectangular3D

using cubic centimeter and cubic meter.

Let’s Answer This!

Look at the figure below. Answer the questions in your notebook.

• How many rows are there in the figure?

• How many cubes are there in each row?

• How many columns are there in the figure?

• How many cubes are there in each column?

• How many layers are there in the figure?

• What do you think are we looking for?

• If each is a cubic unit, how many cubic units are there in the figure?
Let’s Understand It! DIAGRAMS

Number of Layers

Number of Columns
The position of this should
be slanting showing the
number of columns as shown
in the arrow.

There are 8 rows in the figure and each row consists of 8

cubes.

There are 8 columns in the figure and each column consist of 8

cubes.
Number of Rows
Since there are 8 cubes in each row and also 8 cubes in each
column, therefore there are 64 cubes in each layer.

Since there are 3 layers in the figure, therefore the figure

3D CUBE Problem Solving
Example 3
The faculty members of an elementary school donated a cubic box of canned
goods to typhoon victims. What is the volume of the cubic box of canned
goods if one edge of the box measures 40 cm?

Use Polya’s 4-Step Process to solve the problem.

Step 1: Understand

• What is asked in the problem?

The volume of the cubic box of canned goods.
• What is/are the given fact/s?
One edge of the cubic box of canned goods measures 40 cm. 40 cm
• What is the clue word?

multiplication
• What is the number sentence?
V = or V = s x s x s
Since the box of canned goods is a cube, we are looking for the
volume of a cube. The volume of a cube is V = or V = s x s x s

Step 3: Solve
Given: S = 4 units
Solution: Volume of the cubic box of canned goods
V=
=
= (40 cm)(40 cm)(40 cm)
V = 64 000
Answer: The volume of a cubic box of canned goods is 64 000 cubic cm.
Step 4: Check 3D CUBE DIAGRAMS
To check:

The box of canned goods is a cube, therefore, V = s x s x s or

One edge of a box = 40 cm, thus

Volume = or
Volume =
64 000 = (40)(40)(40)
64 000 = 64 000

Since volume = 64 000

Upon checking, the volume of the cubic box of canned

goods is 64 000 .

Mr. Florido made a fish pond in their backyard measuring 8 meters long,
5 meters wide, and 4 meters deep. He sold the soil dug up for Php 36.00 per
cubic meter. How much did he receive for the sale of the soil?

Use Polya’s 4-Step Process to solve the problem.

Step 1: Understand
• What is asked in the problem?
The amount of money Mr. Florido received from the sale of the soil.
• What is/are the given fact/s?
The soil dug up shall be sold for per cubic meter. The fish pond measures 8 meters long, 5
meters
wide, and 4 meters deep.

V x Php 36.00 = N
Step 3: Solve
Given: l = 8 m Total amount he received
w=5m He sold the soil dug up for Php 36.00 for per cubic meter.
h=4m Total amount
Solution: Volume of the =soil
volume of soil x 36.00
V=lxwxh = 160 x 36

V = 160 the
3D CUBE DIAGRAMS
Step 4: Check
To check:
Total amount of money received from the sale of the soil

Total volume of the soil = 160 cubic meters

Amount every cubic meter of soil = Php 36.00

Total amount of money he received from the sale of the soil

= 160 x Php 36.00 = Php 5,760.00

Since Mr. Florido sold the 160 of soil for Php 36.00 per cubic
meter, therefore Mr. Florido received a total amount of Php 5,760.00.

The volume of a cube can be measured by finding
the number of cubic units inside the figure.

Volume is measured in cubic units such as cubic

millimeters ( cubic centimeters ( ), cubic
decimeters (), and cubic meters ().

The volume of a cube is measured through

multiplying the length of the three edges of a cube.

The volume of a rectangular prism is measured

by multiplying the area of the base and its
height.
