Sixty -four 1-cm are contained in the box. The volume of the
box is 64 cubic centimeter (64 cmᵌ).There are no gaps or spaces left
in-between the small cubes. Cubic cm is the standard measure of
volume.

Week 4
Solves routine and non – routine problems Involving the volume of a rectangular prism.
Introduction:
Volume is the amount of space occupied in a solid space. It is measured in cubic units, such as cubic centimeters
(cmᵌ), cubic meter (mᵌ) and cubic millimeter (mmᵌ).
Development:
A rectangular prism is a 3-dimensional object with six rectangular faces. 3- dimensional object means it has a
length, width and height. All its angles are right angles and opposite faces are equal.
In a rectangular prism, the length, width and height may be of different lengths. A rectangular prism is also called a
cuboid or rectangular solid. A cube is a special case of a cuboid in which all six faces are squares.
Volume of a cube = s3
where s is the side of
the cube
The volume of the above rectangular prism would be the product of the length, width and height that is V = l x w x
h where l is the length, w is the width and h is the height.
In solving the volume of the aquarium presented above, you need to follow the 4 steps in problem solving.
Steps Answer
Understand:
1. Know what is asked in the The amount of water needed to fill the
problem. aquarium
2. Know the given facts. l = 130 cm, w = 60 cm, h= 100 cm
Plan:
3. Determine the operation or formula Multiplication: V = l x w x h
to use
Solve:
4. Show the solution using the l = 130 cm, w = 60 cm, h= 100 cm
formula. So, V = l x w x h ; substitute 130 for l, 60 for
w, and 100 for h
= 130 cm x 60 cm x 100 cm
= 780, 000 cmᵌ
Check and look back:
