Rubik's cube is a toy puzzle designed by Erno Rubik during the
mid-1970s. It is a cube-shaped device made up of smaller cube
pieces with six faces having different colors. Today Rubik cube is
one of the number one toys played by children.

Do you know how to play a Rubik’s Cube?
Do you know that the total number of small
cubes in a Rubik’s Cube is called volume?

Volume (V) is the number of cubic units needed to fill the


shape. It is the amount of space that is occupied by a space figures
like cube and rectangular prism. Cube is a solid figure whose length,
width and height are equal while the length, width and height of a
rectangular prism are not equal.
Volume is three-dimensional (3D), composed of the area of
the base (length x width) times the height. That is why it is always in
cubic units (in³, cm³, m³, etc.).

We can visualize volume of a cube and rectangular prism through:

a. Using more units to fill the container (like the used of marbles,
pebbles, rice grains, seed, etc.). This is what we called non-
standard units. Non-standard units do not give consistent and
accurate measure of the volume of a container.

The number of rice grains inside the cubical container and the
amount of water in the swimming is their volume.

b. Using standard units, to find the volume of a space figure,


count the number of cubic units needed to fill the space.
Standard units are consistent and accurate.

Study this.

This is 1 cubic cm box.

=1 cm³

If you count the number of cubes in the


figure at the right. It contains 27 cubes.
Therefore, its volume is 27 cubic
centimeter or 27 cm3.

More Examples:

1. A box is 10 cm long, 5 cm wide and 3 cm tall. What is its


volume?
Let us visualize the problem.

= 1 cm³

The figure above is a box whose dimensions are 10 cm long, 5


cm wide and 3 cm high.
To find its volume, we need to know the number of cubes in
the whole figure.
To find the total centimeter cubes:
 Multiply the number of cubes you see in the width and
length at the bottom layer of the box which is 5 cubes
and 10 cubes respectively.
 5 cubes x 10 cubes = 50 cubes
 Then, multiply its product by the number of layers which is
3.
 50 cubes x 3 layers of cubes = 150 cubes

Therefore, the volume of the box is 150 cm3.

2. Count the number of cubes in the figure below to find its


volume.
 Count the number of cubes at the bottom part
of the figure.
 Width – 4 cubes
 Length – 5 cubes
 Then, multiply.
 4 cubes x 5 cubes = 20 cubes
 Count the number of layers in the figure.
 2 layers
 Lastly, multiply the number of cubes at the
bottom of the figure and the number layers
 20 cubes x 2 layers = 40 cubic units

Unit of measure used for measuring rectangular prism and
cube are cubic millimeter, cubic centimeter, cubic inch, cubic foot,
cubic meter, liters, etc.
 cubic meter (m3) - used to measure large amount of
space occupied
 cubic millimeter (mm3) - used to measure the small
amount of space occupied

Converting cu.cm to cu.m


To convert a cubic centimeter measurement to a cubic meter
measurement, divide the volume by the conversion ratio.
Since one cubic meter is equal to 1,000,000 cubic centimeters,
you can use this simple formula to convert:
cubic meters = cubic centimeters ÷ 1,000,000
The volume in cubic meters is equal to the cubic centimeters
divided by 1,000,000.

For example, here's how to convert 500 cubic centimeters to


cubic meters using the formula above.

500 cm³ = (500 ÷ 1,000,000) = 0.0005 m³

Converting cu. m to cu.cm


To convert a cubic meter measurement to a cubic centimeter
measurement, multiply the volume by the conversion ratio.
Since one cubic meter is equal to 1,000,000 cubic centimeters,
you can use this simple formula to convert:
cubic centimeters = cubic meters × 1,000,000
The volume in cubic centimeters is equal to the cubic meters
multiplied by 1,000,000.

For example, here's how to convert 5 cubic meters to cubic


centimeters using the formula above.

5 m³ = (5 × 1,000,000) = 5,000,000 cm³

To convert a cubic centimeter measurement to a liter


measurement, divide the volume by the conversion ratio.
Since one liter is equal to 1,000 cubic centimeters, you can use
this simple formula to convert:
liters = cubic centimeters ÷ 1,000
The volume in liters is equal to the cubic centimeters divided
by 1,000.

For example, here's how to convert 500 cubic centimeters to


liters using the formula above.

500 cm³ = (500 ÷ 1,000) = 0.5 L

Converting l to cu.cm

To convert a liter measurement to a cubic centimeter


measurement, multiply the volume by the conversion ratio.
Since one liter is equal to 1,000 cubic centimeters, you can use
this simple formula to convert:
cubic centimeters = liters × 1,000
The volume in cubic centimeters is equal to the liters multiplied
by 1,000.

For example, here's how to convert 5 liters to cubic


centimeters using the formula above.

5 L = (5 × 1,000) = 5,000 cm³
