Boyle’s Law
•Robert Boyle (16th century)
•Studied the relationship
between the volume and
pressure of gases at constant
temperature

Inspiring Lives…Shaping the Future…

Boyle’s Law
•Boyle’s Law states that the
volume of a fixed amount of gas is
inversely proportional to its
pressure at constant temperature.

Inspiring Lives…Shaping the Future…

Boyle’s Law
Boyle’s Law equation: P1V1 = P2V2

Where,
• P1 is the initial pressure exerted by the gas
• V1 is the initial volume occupied by the gas
• P2 is the final pressure exerted by the gas
• V2 is the final volume occupied by the gas
Inspiring Lives…Shaping the Future…
Boyle’s Law Application
• Syringe
• The pushing of the plunger reduces the
volume of the fluid in the barrel. This
reduction in the volume causes a
momentary increase in the pressure of
the fluid, and the fluid is injected into
the patient's body.

Inspiring Lives…Shaping the Future…

Boyle’s Law Application
• Human Lungs
• As the lungs expand, there is a momentary

reduction in the pressure. Thus, the pressure inside

the body is lower than the outside. (inhalation)
• When the lungs relax, the volume of the lungs
decreases, which increases the pressure
momentarily relative to the outside. (exhalation)

Inspiring Lives…Shaping the Future…

Boyle’s Law Application
• Bicycle pump
• When the handle of a pump is pushed down,
the pressure inside the pump will increase
momentarily. In other words, the gas inside
is compressed. As a result, the pressurized
gas is forced inside the tire of a vehicle.

Inspiring Lives…Shaping the Future…

Boyle’s Law Application
• Air Bubble
• Air bubbles expand as they ascend
in water. As the bubbles rise, the
surrounding pressure of the liquid
decreases. And according to
Boyle's law, the air bubbles
expand.
