INSTRUCTIONAL LESSON PLAN IN SCIENCE 6

Grade Level Six (6)

Quarter 4th Quarter

Content Standard Demonstrate an understanding of the different theories on the formation of

land and water.
a. Continental drift
b. Plate tectonics
Performance Standard Explain the different theories on the formation of continental drift and plate
tectonics.
Learning Competency Identify the characteristics of Continental Drift and Plate Tectonics Theory
and differentiate the continental drift vs. plate tectonics theory.
I. Learning Objective The learners are expected to:
 Identify the characteristics of Continental Drift and Plate Tectonics
Theory
 Differentiate the continental drift vs. plate tectonics theory.
 Participate actively in class discussion.
II. Subject Matter Continental vs. Plate Tectonics Theory

A. Concept The continental drift is the gradual movement of the continents across the
earth’s surface through geological time. Plate tectonics is a theory explaining
the structure of the earth’s crust and many
B. Materials Power point presentation, Pictures, Chart, video

C. References https://www.livescience.com

Science 6 “ Unit 4 The Earth and Beyond” page 299-304
D. Process Skills Describing, Observing, Explaining, Identifying

E. Values Integration Participation in doing the activity.

III. Learning Tasks

-Good Morning Class!
(Good Morning Ma’am)

A. Engage *Activating Prior knowledge: Recall on the Minerals of the Earth

Drill: Word Puzzle
-The teacher will group the class into 3 groups.
*The pupils will be given cut out picture for them to arrange it, to form a
concrete picture.

Alfred Wegener

Question:
1. What word did you form?
(Continental Drift, Plate Tectonics, Alfred Wegener)
2. Do you any idea about continental?
(Continental describes one of the earliest ways geologies thought
continents moved over time.)
3. How about plate tectonics?
(Are separated pieces of solid rock from the lithosphere.)
4. Do you have any idea about Alfred Wegener?
( Alfred Wegener is a scientist, meteorologist and geophysicist. The first
person to formulate a complete statement of the continental drift.)

B. Explore Presentation of New Lesson

(Film Viewing )
https://www.makemegenius.com
*Today we are going to watch a short a video that will help us understand more
about continental drift vs plate tectonics theory.
*The teacher will set standards for film viewing.
a. View attentively
b. Take down important notes while viewing.
Group Activity:
Group 1
What is the difference between the theory of plate tectonics and the theory of
continental?
(Continental drift suggests that all the land masses on earth were once part of
one continent. Plate tectonics is the ability to measure the movement of land
masses.
Group 2
List down some examples of tectonic activity.
(Earthquakes, volcanic activity, mountain building and the formation of oceanic
trenches occur along this plate tectonics.)
Group 3
Give the characteristics of continental drift and plate tectonics.
(Continental plate are made of rock and drift all over the globe, they move both
horizontally(sideways) and vertically(up and down. Tectonic they are rigid and
concrete, but at the same time different from each other because their shape is
very irregular.

C. Explain *The leader or assigned reporter of each group will present their output to the
class.
*The teacher notes down incorrect answers and those important information
that was not brought up.
Question to process:
1. What is the difference between the theory of plate tectonics and the theory
of continental?
(Continental drift suggests that all the land masses on earth were once part of
one continent. Plate tectonics is the ability to measure the movement of land
masses.
2. What are the examples of plate tectonics activity?
(Earthquakes, volcanic activity, mountain building and the formation of oceanic
trenches occur along this plate tectonics.)
3.What are the characteristics of continental drift and plate tectonics?
(Continental plate are made of rock and drift all over the globe, they move both
horizontally(sideways) and vertically(up and down. Tectonic they are rigid and
concrete, but at the same time different from each other because their shape is
very irregular.)

D. Elaborate *The teacher will explain more about the lesson for the pupils to understand
well.
CONTINENTAL DRIFT- as a theory that explained how continents shift position
on Earth’s surface set faith in 1912 by Alfred Wegener a geophysicist and
meteorologist. Continental drift also explained why look-alike animal and
planet fossils and similar rock formation are found on different continents.

PLATE TECTONIC- the theory of plate tectonics state that the earth solid outer,
crust, the lithosphere is separated into plate that move over the atmosphere
the motion upper position of the mantle. Oceanic and Continental plates come
together spread apart and interact at boundaries all over the planet. Plate
tectonics is the most important concept in modern geology.

*Give another activity.

TRUE OR FALSE

1. Continental Drift Theory paves way for the study of Seafloor Spreading
Theory. (TRUE)
2. Seafloor Spreading Theory explains how drifting of continents happen
which was the main idea of continental drift. (FALSE)
3. According to Continental Drift Theory, the process of seafloor spreading
is the reason why continents drifted apart. (TRUE)
4. According to the Seafloor spreading Theory, continental plate is the
actual site of tectonic activity where seafloor spreading occurs. (TRUE)
5. Based on Continental Drift Theory, it is in the oceanic where tectonic
activity happened. (FALSE)
