    Unit 10 – Grammar

    The Passive Voice


    Form

    S + be + Vpp (3/ed) + by O

    Examples:

    1. A cake is made by me.

    2. The house was painted by my father.


    How to make a passive voice sentence?

    Active voice

    Passive voice

    Example:

    Active: I make a cake.

    Passive: A cake is made by me.


    When to use the passive voice?

     When we don’t want to take responsibility for something.

     When we want to focus on a happening, not who or what did it.

     When we want to avoid “vague subjects”


    NOTES

    1. Adverb of place is placed before “by O”.


    English is learned at school by students.

    2. Adverb of time is placed after “by O”.


    The windows were broken by the boys yesterday.
     
     
    3. “by” can be omitted if followed by personal pronouns (me, him, her, them, us..) or
    indefinite pronouns (people, someone, anyone, anybody, somebody, everyone…).
    The passive
    voice can be Tenses Passive forms
    1. Present simple S + am/is/are + V3/ed
    used in various
    2. Past simple S + was/were +V3/ed
    tenses. 3. Present continuous S + am/is/are + being +V3/ed
    4. Past continuous S + was/were + being + V3/ed
    5. Present perfect S + have/has + been + V3/ed
    6. Past perfect S + had + been + V3/ed
    7. Present perfect continuous S+ have/has + been + being +
    V3/ed
    8. Past perfect continuous S + had + been + being +
    V3/ed
    9. Future simple S + will + be + V3/ed
    10. Modal verbs S + can, may….. + be + V3/ed
    (Can, may, could, should,…
    have to, used to, ought to)
    Exercise 1: Use the correct form of the words given in the brackets
    to finish the sentences.

    Exercise 2: Rearrange the words to make a complete sentence:
     
    1. has/the/door/opened./been
      => The door has been opened.
    2. on/is/grass/the/prohibited./walking
      => Walking on the grass is prohibited.

      => Breakfast is served at 8.30.
    4. spoken/in/English/is/shop./this
      => English is spoken in this shop.
    5. were/flowers/the/this/morning./watered/
    => The flowers were watered this morning.
    Exercise 3: Rewrite the following sentences using passive voice.

    1.The Beatles wrote “A hard day’s night”.


      => “A hard day’s night was written by the Beatles.
    2.John invited Fiona to his birthday party last night.
      => Fiona was invited to John’s birthday party last night.
    3.Her mother is preparing the dinner in the kitchen.
      => The chicken is being prepared in the kitchen by her mother.
    4.We should clean our teeth twice a day.
      => Our teeth should be cleaned twice a day.
    5.Our teachers have explained the English grammar.
    => The English grammar has been explained by our teachers.
