PASSIVE / ACTIVE

Active voice emphasizes who or what did the action.


Example : Mr. John bought this car five years ago. (Who did the action? Mr. John)
The cat ate the fish this morning. (What did the action? The cat)

Passive voice emphasizes what happened.


Example : This car was bought by Mr. John five years ago.
(What happened? This car was bought)

Pay attention to a further explanation:

ACTIVE PASSIVE
1. SIMPLE PRESENT

going to, etc.
EXERCISES:
A. Change the sentences into active!
1. Some tigers have been trapped by the hunter.
Hunter has trapped some tigers.
2. A big parcel is received by him today.
He has receive a big parcel.
3. The old man was helped by you.
You was helped the old man
4. The difficult lesson has been taught by Mr. Adi.
Mr. Adi has taught the difficult lesson.
5. The seeds were being buried on the ground by them.
They were buring the seeds on the ground.

B. Change the sentences into passive!


1. My uncle sells his house today.
My uncle’s house is sold by my uncle today.
2. You brought those apples last week.
Those apples were brought by you last week.
3. The old lady has given me the thick book.
The thick book has been given by the old lady.
4. Rico is fixing his new computer now.
New computer is being fixed by Rico.
5. I have written a long letter for her.
A long letter for her have been written by me.

C. Change the sentences into active / passive!


1. A bottle of ink is not being spilt by my little brother.
My little brother is not spilling a bottle of ink.
2. My little brother is not making some kites.
Some kites is not being made by my little brother.
3. Were the letters burnt by the secretary?
Did the secretary burn the letters?
4. Do they sing a song every day?
Are the song sung by them?
5. The pool is being cleaned by the old man.
The old man is cleaning the pool.
