COMMON
AREAS OF
STRESSOR
THAT AFFECT
ADOLESCENTS
A. School
Adolescents consider school as their
number one stressor. Their academic
performance and extra-curricular demands
stress them. They worry if their grades
would be satisfactory to get them to college
or what their career paths should be.
B. Family Breakdown
Parents with drug and alcohol issues, domestic
violence, or other relational problems create a
hotbed of stress for teenagers. Home instability
promotes depression and lifelong anxiety on
teens and these result to teen trying to manage
their newfound desire for independence and
wanting to break away from the family unit.
C. Body Image
What a teenager thinks about how
peers regard his/her appearance affects
his/her stress level. They usually worry
about how they look and how society
looks at them since physical appearance
is very important to them.
D. Finances
Teens view money or how to get it as
a major stressor second to school. They
have endless wants. They want to shop
for clothes, foods, and other items that
are the current trend to make them fit
it.
E. Criticism
Criticisms strain teenagers so much.
They are afraid and sometimes even
take criticism negatively that leads
them to poor decision making which
they will regret later on.
F. Romantic Relationship
Teens hardly take break-ups
positively. Despite the predictable
pattern of teen dating, adolescents
believe wholeheartedly that the love
they feel for their present partner will
be forever.
G. Cyber Bullying
Cyber Bullying is a modern stressor. More and more
teenagers use cellphones, social networking
websites, and chat rooms for this purpose. Typing
hurtful comments, spreading rumors, and posting
humiliating pictures are a few types of harassment
young people face. Middle-school students who are
cyber bullied are more likely to have suicidal
thoughts.
H. Siblings
Birth order also affects teens stress levels.
Living in a sibling's shadow, feeling invisible,
fighting over possessions and privileges,
coping with all stressors attached to
siblings. First born have the highest level of
anxiety while those born later tend to be
self-conscious.
I. Time Management
Many teens have jam-packed schedules and
find it difficult to relax, unwind, and de-stress.
Keeping up with adults and commitments,
packed schedules, not having enough time to
sleep and relax, and dealing with deadlines can
stress teens and make them feel like they need
to be always on the go.
J. Sense of Loss
Teens may also feel stress and anxiety
when experiencing a sense of loss. In
addition to dealing with heart
problems or the death of a family
member of a friend, loss may also
mean end of a relationship.
