CLÍNICA
Kidney Function Test
kidney function test, any clinical and laboratory procedure
designed to evaluate various aspects of renal (kidney) capacity
and efficiency and to aid in the diagnosis of kidney disorders.
Such tests can be divided into several categories, which include
concentration and dilution tests, whereby the specific gravity of
urine is determined at regular time intervals following water
restriction or large water intake, to measure the capacity of the
kidneys to conserve water or other substances.
Echocardiography
•Diagnostic technique that uses ultrasound
(high-frequency sound waves) to produce an
image of the internal structures of the heart. A
piezoelectric transducer placed on the surface
of the chest emits a short burst of ultrasound
waves and then measures the reflection, or
echo, of the sound as it bounces back from
cardiac structures such as the heart valves and
the muscle wall.
Auscultation

•Diagnostic procedure in which the physician listens to sounds

within the body to detect certain defects or conditions, such as
heart-valve malfunctions or pregnancy. Auscultation originally was
performed by placing the ear directly on the chest or abdomen, but it
has been practiced mainly with a stethoscope since the invention of
that instrument in 1819.

•The technique is based on characteristic sounds produced, in the

head and elsewhere, by abnormal blood circuits; in the joints by
roughened surfaces; in the lower arm by the pulse wave; and in the
abdomen by an active fetus or by intestinal disturbances. It is most
commonly employed, however, in diagnosing diseases of the  heart
 and lungs.
Glucose
•Glucose tolerance test, procedure to assess the ability of the body to metabolize glucose, the
principal type of sugar found in the blood.

•In persons with normal or slightly elevated blood-sugar levels, the body tolerance to sugar is

tolerance test
measured in a stressful situation induced by administering a large amount of glucose. The most
common procedure is to take an initial blood sample from a fasting individual, have the individual
empty his or her bladder, and then administer orally 50–100 grams of glucose
Blood Count
•Blood count, laboratory test that determines the number of red blood cells
(erythrocytes) and white blood cells (leukocytes) in a given volume of blood. The
readings vary with sex, age, physiological state, and general health, but the blood of
a normal individual contains on average 5,000,000 red cells and 7,000 white cells
per cubic millimetre. A differential blood count is the percentage of each type of
white blood cell per 100 white cells counted; the white cells of a normal adult are
about 55 percent neutrophils, 30 percent lymphocytes, and small percentages of
eosinophils, basophils, and monocytes.
