Classification of

living things
Classification

There are millions of species on our planet.

Although species can be very different from each other, many

have similar features that allow us to put them into groups.

This is called classification.

Kingdoms
The first big division of living things in the classification system is to put them into one of five kingdoms.

These are based on what an organism's cells are like.

Living organisms are classified into groups depending on their structure and characteristics. This system was
developed in the 18th by Carl Linnaeus.

The five kingdoms are:

animals plants) fungi prokaryotes protoctists)
Animals can be classified as either vertebrates or invertebrates.

Vertebrates: Invertebrates:

❖ Fish, annelids,
❖ Amphibians, nematodes,
❖ Reptiles, mollusks and
❖ Birds and
❖ Mammals. arthropods
Vertebrates

Vertebrates are animals that have a backbone inside their body.

They are classified into groups called classes , which include:
❖Fish,
❖Amphibians,
❖Reptiles,
❖Birds and
❖Mammals.
Fish

Fish absorb oxygen through their gills and they have wet scales.

Their body temperature changes according to their surroundings.

Fish reproduce by external fertilization and lay eggs.

Amphibians

Amphibians are small vertebrates that need water, or a

moist environment, to survive. The species in this group
include frogs, toads, salamanders, and newts.

All can breathe and absorb water through their very thin
skin. Their body temperature also varies according to their
surroundings. Amphibians also reproduce by external
fertilization and lay eggs.
REPTILES

Reptiles have lungs and dry scales.

Their body temperature varies according to their surroundings.

They include crocodiles, snakes, lizards, turtles, and tortoises. All

regularly shed the outer layer of their skin.
They reproduce by laying eggs on land.
Birds

Birds have lungs, feathers and beaks.

They can maintain their body
temperature.
Like reptiles, birds reproduce by internal
fertilization and lay eggs.
Mammals

They are the group of vertebrate animals in which the

young are nourished with milk.

Mammals have lungs and fur. Like birds, they can

maintain their body temperature. Mammals reproduce
by internal fertilization and they give birth to live
young.
Taxonomy

Taxonomy is the science of naming and classifying

organisms.

A taxon is a group of organisms in a classification

system.

There are 7 main taxa.

Classification

– Classification is the grouping together of organisms on the basic of features

they have in common.

– Classification is important because makes studying organisms easier.

– Linnaeus’ classification has seven levels.
