COROSSION

EDITED BY

HAYDER ALI HUSSIEN

MSC. MATERIAL ENGINEERING
VT, PT,MT, RT, UT AND PAUT ATHOURIZED INSPECTOR
DEFINITION OF CORROSION

• Physical interaction between a metal and its environment that result in change in the
properties of metal, and which can often lead to impairment of the function of the metal,
the environment or the technical system of which these form apart.
• Current estimates show that the cost of corrosion in the U.S. exceeds Ꞩ500 billion per
year.
TYPE OF CORROSION

1- Uniform Corrosion.
2- Localized Corrosion.
3- Stress Corrosion Cracking
Stress corrosion cracking is the cracking induced from the combined influence of tensile stress and a
corrosive environment.
In LPG units SCC may accured because of present of H2S in LPG from supplier.
SCC of H2S may form many different type:
1- Hydrogen Blistering
2- Hydrogen-induced Cracking (HIC)
3- Stress-oriented Hydrogen-induced Cracking (SOHIC)
4- Sulfide Stress Cracking (SCC)
CORROSION IN PRESSURE VESSELS

• Corrosion in pressure vessels may take different forms like thinning, pitting or cracking.
• The inspection of new pressure vessels shall be according to the design code like (ASME-
VIII Dev.2 OR DN AD-2000 Merk blatter).
• API-510 covers the in-service inspection, repair, alteration, and rerating activities for
pressure vessels and the pressure-relieving devices protecting these vessels.
• API 570 covers inspection, rating, repair, and alteration procedures for metallic piping
systems and their associated pressure relieving devices that have been placed in service.
ASSESSMENT OF DEFFECT

• Assessment of defect in pressure vessels and piping system shall be according to the design
code for new units and according to (API-510 & API-570) for in service units by an authorized
inspector.
• The inspection procedures and inspection activities shall be achieved according to corrosion
analysis of that units to estimate the required NDT methods and other procedures (Inspection
Plane).
• An inspection plan shall be established for all pressure vessels, pressure-relieving devices,
pipes and other accessories of units within the scope of the specific code.
INSPECTION AND TEST PLANE (ITP)

According to the corrosion may accured in LPG vessels the internal inspection shall be included but
not limited:
1- Visual inspection to detect pitting, blisters …etc.
2- UT thickness measurement to detect thinning and pitting.
3- WFMT to detect SSC
4- PAUT may be used to detect cracks.
5- Microstructure analysis.
PREVENTATION OF CORROSION

• Corrosion may accrue externally or internally.

• According to (S.C.G.F.S) external corrosion of pressure vessels may be controlled by
Appling a special coating system according to (ISO-12944).
• Internal corrosion may be eliminated by applying of internal protective coating according
to (NACE-SP-181).
NOTE: This specification not recommended by (S.C.G.F.S).
EXTERNAL CORROSION

• According to ISO-12944 there are to reasons of external corrosion:

1- Atmospheric Environments.
ISO-12944 divided atmospheric environment to six levels:
1- C1 very low corrosivity
2- C2 low corrosivity
3- C3 Medium corrosivity
4- C4 high corrosivity
5- C5 very high corrosivity
6- CX extreme corrosivity
2- Categories for water and soil.
It consist of four levels:
SELECTION OF EXTERNAL PAINT SYSTEM

• Selection of paint system, number of coating layers & its thickness depend on the
corrosivity of surrounded environments and durability of painting system.
• These rules can be determined in the ISO-12944 Annex C for carbon steel vessels.
• Table C1 to C2 explain all above details.
EVALUATION OF PIPELINEES & PRESSURE
VESSELS FOR RESISTANCE TO HIC
• NACE TM0284 explained the test method to evaluate of new pipelines & pressure
vessels to resistance to HIC by immersion of specific specimens cutting from required
pipe or vessel and immersion it in a solution of inert gas, H2S, NaCl, CH3COOH and
distilled or deionized water.
ASSESSMENT OF HYDROGEN BLISTERS AND HYDROGEN
DAMAGE ASSOCIATED WITH HIC & SOHIC

• Assessment of defect caused by hydrogen may be evaluated according to the diagram

below.
• Assessment procedures consist of three levels and every level consist of many steps.
• If the pipe or vessel was accepted by level I that means we can return it to service if not
the next assessment level is used.
• If the pipe or pressure vessel doesn't pass from three levels we go to repair or replace it.
