SCOPE AND LIMITATIONS

•
• The scope of our study is focused more on the
demand and welfare of the entire community of
Zamboanga, as well as on how to establish a good
design and of course proper planning of the
Jeepney Terminal that conceptualizes Sustainable
Architecture which is an environment responsible
aimed at providing comfort through the fusion of
modernization and other environmental sources.

building materials).
• potential location will be the most efficient
area for the structure to be constructed
LIMITATIONS OF THE STUDY:
• need of the city to provide Jeepney Terminal
in the Town Proper in order to sustain proper
Jeepney transportation system in the city.
• Urban studies in Zamboanga City are limited.
• Unavailability of some data, information and
statistics was due to the following limitations.
• inadequate material about Jeepney Terminals
since there is none that exists in the city.
REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND
STUDIES
• Thesis of Aljeroe Funtila “The Terminal”
• air filtration applied inside a Bus Terminal that
benefit to the commuters and operators
• provided skylight instead of gutter that runs to
through the middle of the butterfly roof for day
lighting
• air curtains to prevent fumes from entering the
building when passengers make their way inside
the Bus
• Terminal’s arrival and departure wings feature
butterfly roofs that slope downward to the
middle, where skylights are installed.
• Clerestory windows and glass curtains in
certain areas are more than enough to allow
natural lighting.
• Skylights will add energy load mended to cool
the air conditioned building.
• Defense against smoke inhalation, the waiting
area is vertically segregated one floor apart
from the Bus platforms.
• Smoke reducing devices that absorb, filter and
purify air are installed just outside and access
doors to reduce smoke intake by the
passengers.
Legazpi Grand Central Terminal
• The Legazpi Grand Central Terminal is the first
state-of-the-art transport terminal in
Bicol Region of the Philippines, and covers an
area of about 3.9 hectares. It is located at
Legazpi Port District, Legazpi, Albay.
• Its first-rate terminal services are equipped with a well
mapped-out system.
• The terminal operation includes high-end monitors hooked
up to the system and a computerized entrance and exit for
maximum security.
• It also manages the operation and interface of various
land–based transport services such as buses, jeepneys,
filcabs and tricycles thus ensuring fast and efficient
terminal operations and making travel easier.
• Legazpi Grand Central Terminal also houses restaurants,
souvenir shops and shopping centers.
Sustainable Architecture
• In recent years, sustainability concept has become the common interest of
numerous disciplines. The reason for this popularity is to perform the
sustainable development. The Concept of Green Architecture, also known
as “sustainable architecture” or “green building,” is the theory, science and
style of buildings designed and constructed in accordance with
environmentally friendly principles. Green architecture strives to minimize
the number of resources consumed in the building's construction, use and
operation, as well as curtailing the harm done to the environment through
the emission, pollution and waste of its components. To design, construct,
operate and maintain buildings energy, water and new materials are
utilized as well as amounts of waste causing negative effects to health and
environment is generated. In order to limit these effects and design
environmentally sound and resource efficient buildings; “green building
systems” must be introduced, clarified, understood and practiced.
Solar Panel
• Active solar devices such as photovoltaic solar panels help
to provide sustainable electricity for any use. Electrical
output of a solar panel is dependent on orientation,
efficiency, latitude, and climate—solar gain varies even at
the same latitude.
• The low efficiency of certain photovoltaic panels can
significantly affect the payback period of their installation.
This low efficiency does not mean that solar panels are not
a viable energy alternative.
• Roofs are often angled toward the sun to allow
photovoltaic panels to collect at maximum efficiency.
Air Purifier
• An air purifier or air cleaner is a device which removes
contaminants from the air in a room.
• These devices are commonly marketed as being beneficial to
allergy sufferers and asthmatics, and at reducing or eliminating
second-hand tobacco smoke.
• The commercially graded air purifiers are manufactured as either
small stand-alone units or larger units that can be affixed to an air
handler unit (AHU) or to an HVAC unit found in the medical,
industrial, and commercial industries.
• Air purifiers may also be used in industry to remove impurities
such as CO2 from air before processing. Pressure swing absorbers
or other adsorption techniques are typically used for this.
• Filter - based purification traps airborne particles
by size exclusion. Air is forced through a filter
and particles are physically captured by the filter.
High-efficiency particulate arrestance (HEPA)
filters remove at least 99.97% of 0.3-micrometer
particles and are usually more effective at
removing larger particles. HEPA purifiers, which
filter all the air going into a clean room, must be
arranged so that no air bypasses the HEPA filter.
• Ionizer purifiers’ use charged electrical
surfaces or needles to generate electrically
charged air or gas ions. These ions attach to
airborne particles which are then
electrostatically attracted to a charged
collector plate. This mechanism produces
trace amounts of ozone and other oxidants as
by-products.
Electrostatic Precipitators
• Electrostatic precipitators remove fine particles from the air by placing an
electrical charge on the particles.
• The particles are then attracted to an oppositely charged collection plate.
• Electrostatic precipitators are very efficient at collecting fine particles but cannot
be used in very dusty operations because they clog easily.
• They can effectively remove fumes and fine particles but not gases or vapours
from the air.
• Electrostatic precipitators should not be used around flammable chemicals
because an explosion could result if a spark is given off in the collector.
• Common uses are in coal burning, plastic extrusion, and metal mining operations.

• An electrostatic precipitator (ESP) is a filtration device that removes fine particles,

like dust and smoke, from a flowing gas using the force of an induced
electrostatic charge minimally impeding the flow of gases through the unit.
Electrostatic Precipitator Working Principles
• At its most basic, an electrostatic precipitator is an air purification
tool that uses electrostatic force to grab and hold dust and other
particles. It consists primarily of wires and collection plates, with a
high voltage applied from an electrostatic field between the wires
and the collecting plate, charging the air electrically and ionizing
them in the process. When airborne particles such as dust or
pollen flows between the collecting plates, the particles become
charged, which causes them to attach to the collecting plates. The
air then flows through, leaving the particles behind. The result is
cleaner and purified air. The particles that have been collected are
then shaken loose, scraped off, or washed away, and disposed of
in a safe and environmentally-friendly manner.
• The researchers will apply all mentioned
related studies and modern technology
devices in designing the Jeepney Terminal.
With this, the proposal will have a basis on
where to base the study.
THEORETICAL/CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORK
• The researchers would like to apply the concept of
Sustainable Transport System Development, a concept
that in general are those that can function in the
foreseeable future without collapse or depletion of
the resource base on which they depend.
• The new Jeepney Terminal will operate efficiently,
offer choice of Jeepney transport mode, and also it
support a vibrant economy by limiting the emissions
and waste produce by different transportation.
• Furthermore by minimizing the level of energy and
resources consumption while reducing pollution
such as noise pollution and carbon emission the
proposed Jeepney Terminal will be more efficient
and sustainable. This proposal also seeks to
minimize the use of renewable energy by
introducing sustainable architecture. With the
adaption of modern technology through air-
filtration system, the proposal will be more eco-
friendly and sustainable.

CASE STUDIES
• CASE STUDY 1: Legazpi Grand Central Terminal

• The Legazpi Grand Central Terminal is the first state-of-the-art transport terminal
in Bicol Region of the Philippines, and covers an area of about 3.9 hectares. It is
located at Legazpi Port District, Legazpi, Albay. Its first-rate terminal services are
equipped with a well mapped-out system. The terminal operation includes high-
end monitors hooked up to the system and a computerized entrance and exit for
maximum security. It also manages the operation and interface of various land–
based transport services such as buses, jeepneys, filcabs and tricycles thus
ensuring fast and efficient terminal operations and making travel easier. Legazpi
Grand Central Terminal also houses restaurants, souvenir shops and shopping
centers. The researchers would like to apply the facilities and services the
Legazpi Grand Central Terminal renders to its users. With this the researchers will
have a basis in planning and designing the proposed Jeepney Terminal.
CASE STUDY 2: Jeep/Tricycle Terminal in
Laoac, Pangasinan
• The project is constructed in front of the public market at Poblacion, Laoac, Pangasinan and within
the 5th District of Pangasinan. Before there was no designated parking area or terminal for tricycles
within the town site. The tricycles coming from the South, parks in front of the rural health unit,
and the legislative building and tricycles coming from the South and Western parts of the LGU wait
for passengers along the road west of the legislative building. Tricycles parked everywhere at the
side of the road was an eyesore especially at the heart of the town. Besides commuters have no
specific direction where to get their ride. Construction of terminal for Tricycles and Jeeps in front of
the public will be beneficial not only for both tricycle drivers and commuters; likewise, the terminal
will improve the business atmosphere of the Public Market, since it will be very accessible to the
consumers. The project was a complementary to the administration’s program designating the
town site as a discipline zone where cleanliness, solid waste management and self-discipline are
inculcated among the constituents. The goals of the project are provision of easy access of
transportation for the commuters and promote the development of commercial activities within
the Poblacion.
•
• The relation of the proposed study Zamboanga City Jeepney Terminal and the Jeep/Tricycle
Terminal of the Public Market at Poblacion, Laoac, Pangasinan are that both are solution to the
congestion of the Central Business District and has easy access of transportation for commuters
CASE STUDY 3: Jeepney Terminal in Angeles
City
• The Main Gate Friendship Jeepney Terminal has been
constructed, completing the face lift of a long stretch of the
Clark-bordered side of Fields and Don Juico Ave. Prior to the
completion of the Terminal was the road widening and addition
of eatery stalls located behind some iron fencing next to the
Terminal. The beautification initiative of Mayor Tan, funded by
the ABC group, was aimed at reducing traffic congestion along
the crucial junction as well.
•
• The researchers would like to set the Angeles City’s Jeepney
Terminal as a basis for understanding the functions and
necessities of a Jeepney Terminal.
CASE STUDY 4: Jeepney Terminal in Olongapo
City
• Olongapo City is a clear picture of what good governance can do. An excellent
example of this is the transportation system. Former Mayor Richard Gordon
implemented a transport scheme that eliminated traffic problems, made
commuting easier for passenger and protected the transportation business of its
residents. Jeepney and tricycle drivers wear uniforms and I.D.'s for identification
and public utility Jeepneys are color-coded. For instance, a blue jeepney will take
you from Subic town in the north to Olongapo City and vice-versa while a yellow
one will bring you from Sta. Rita to Ramon Magsaysay Drive.
•
• The researchers would like to apply how the local government of Olongapo City
implemented their transportation scheme through color-coding of Jeepneys with
this solution, the congestion and disorganized loading and unloading areas for
jeepney commuters in Central Business District will be eliminated.
CASE STUDY 5: Thesis of Aljeroe Funtila “The
Terminal”
• Aljeroe Funtila proposed a centralized city and provincial
bus terminal with integrated office and retail spaces and a
mechanism that reduces passengers’ smoke intake.
• As for the architecture, the terminal’s arrival and departure
wings feature butterfly roofs that slope downward to the
middle, where skylights are installed. Clerestory windows
and glass curtains in certain areas are more than enough to
allow for natural lighting: the skylights will just add to the
energy load needed to cool the air-conditioned building. It
is also unclear how this glass valley will handle storm water
runoff, given the lack of gutters.
• As a first line of defense, the waiting area is
vertically segregated one floor apart from the bus
platforms. Second, the platforms where passengers
queue during boarding time are enclosed, and
access doors will only open once the bus is in
position to pick up or drop off passengers. Third,
smoke-reducing devices that absorb, filter and purify
air are installed just outside all access doors to
reduce smoke intake by passengers at the moment
they cross the threshold and hop onto the bus.
• The researchers would like to apply this concept to the proposed Jeepney Terminal.
The researchers plan to add skylight for natural lighting and solar panel for energy
consumptions and use it for providing electricity. The researchers will use modern
technology devices that can absorb carbon emission produced by the Jeepney
vehicles. So instead of air conditioned building, the researchers would like to
emphasize spaces and architectural solutions to maximize natural ventilation. In
addition, the researchers’ plans to provide spaces and areas that can help commuters’
behaviour like food stalls and entertainment area for them to be entertained while
waiting for their ride. The researchers also decided to have one Jeepney bay on East
wing and one Jeepney bay on the West wing for the design to become balance. In
addition the researchers would like to add some landscapes for beautification, prevent
air pollution and for the Jeepney Terminal to become a sustainable structure. The
proposal will provide facilities that will embrace efficiency and active security; answers
the needs of commuters to convenience and to provide an effective public Jeepney
Terminal that will help solve transportation problems.
•
RESEARCH TOPIC
• The researchers introduce new technology through
air filtration system as the research focus of the study.
This new technology of air filtration will help process
the researchers’ concept of decreasing carbon
emission and converting it to renewable source of
energy. This technology will be the main architectural
element that the researchers would like to apply in
the Jeepney Terminal. Through this process the
structure will achieve the researchers’ goal of
constructing of modern and sustainable building.
A portable Sharp FU-888SV Plasmacluster
Electrostatic
Air Purifier marketed to consumers
Conceptual diagram of an Electrostatic
Precipitator
• The researchers decided to introduce modern technology for the air
filtration system that will absorb carbon emission from the Jeepney
vehicles and transform this into clean air. At its most basic, an
electrostatic precipitator is an air purification tool that uses electrostatic
force to grab and hold dust and other particles. It consists primarily of
wires and collection plates, with a high voltage applied from an
electrostatic field between the wires and the collecting plate, charging the
air electrically and ionizing them in the process. When airborne particles
such as dust or pollen flows between the collecting plates, the particles
become charged, which causes them to attach to the collecting plates.
The air then flows through, leaving the particles behind. The result is
cleaner and purified air. The particles that have been collected are then
shaken loose, scraped off, or washed away, and disposed of in a safe and
environmentally-friendly manner.
• The researchers chose this study because the
researchers can relate to the transportation
problems of the city because they themselves
are also commuters and can observe the lack
of a Jeepney Terminal. So the researchers
propose this study to give solution to the
scattered unloading and loading areas for
Jeepney commuters.
Chapter 3:ANALYSIS & INTERPRETATION OF
DATA
SITE SELECTION CRITERIA
• After rating all the sites, the researchers decided to
have three (3) Jeepney Terminals to accommodate
all the Jeepney in the city and this are the VACANT
LOT AT CALLE GUARDIA NACIONAL (Front of Bureau
of Fire and Protection), VACANT LOT AT
GOV.ALVAREZ AVE. (Side of Ateneo De Zamboanga
Main Campus) and VACANT LOT AT VETERANS AVE.
(Front of Budget Wise). The researchers chose these
three (3) sites because of its large area, accessibility
and the location itself.

SITE ANALYSIS

The lot in the present is vacant and has no existing structure. It is not quite a flat-surface area which will greatly influence the
design of the Jeepney Terminal. There are existing adjacent structures in the site. There are no utilities built on the site. There are no
valuable trees or beneficial landscape in the site. The proposed site is located at the CBD and has a total distance of 1,211.19 ft (369.17
m) from City Hall and total land area of 90,112.09 ft² (8,371.69 m²). It is enough to accommodate a Jeepney Terminal because it is big
enough and has accessible entrance and exit. The location falls under no apparent erosion but prone to flood. But the researchers can
solve this problem by putting some ramps for access and by elevating the finished floor line. And the researchers conducted solutions to
the weakness of this site by putting some road signs and street lights to have a organize flow between commuters, operators and
Jeepneys.
SITE B VACANT LOT AT GOV.ALVAREZ AVE. (Side of
Ateneo De Zamboanga Main Campus)

The lot is vacant and has no existing structures and no appreciable impact
for the banana trees present in the site. The large area is suitable for the
researchers’ vision of the Jeepney Terminal. The site has a flat slope but
with contour and corners which will influence the design of the Jeepney
Terminal. There are no available utilities in the site. The propose site is
located at the North from the heart of the city with a total distance of 819
meters from City Hall and a total area of 389,425.57 ft² (36,178.82 m²). It is
accessible to have a Jeepney Terminal in this site because it is a big area and
it can accommodate units of Jeepneys from North, East coast and West
coast. The researchers will provide main entrance and exit points with
signage that can instruct both Jeepney commuters and operators.
SITE C VACANT LOT AT VETERANS AVE. (Front of
Budget Wise)

The lot is vacant and it has no existing structures yet. It has a flat sloping with no
appreciable impact and beneficial landscape in the site. There are no utilities
available but the researchers will provide for the facilities for the proposed Jeepney
Terminal. It can really affect the site because the structure will be developed. The
propose site is located at the East coast from the heart of the city with a total
distance of 2,737.77 ft (834.47 m) and a total area of 329,555.50 ft² (30,616.71 m²).
It is accessible because it is along the National Road and has a wide area for the
Jeepney Terminal. A gasoline station is also near the site and has a flat sloping. It
has a weak road condition so the researchers will provide putting signage, street
lights and proper drainage system

• Environment-Behavior Studies

The researchers used environment-behavior studies as an approach to the humanistic purposes of the research. It is a
view of a design and of the environment which places the values, needs, and preferences of users at the forefront of the
design process. Its goal is the satisfaction of human needs and the elimination of environmentally induced stress.
Everything that a human does is in response to the environment.

These are the activities inside and outside the Jeepney Terminal:

1. Commercial services inside the Jeepney Terminal:

• Shops
• Food Stalls
• Entertainment
• Business center

2. Real Estate Management:

• Renting facilities for logistical and support uses inside and outside the terminal.
• Managing facilities for the business outside the terminal.

The pie chart shows the comparison between the identified impact elements on all of
the proposed three (3) sites. There were a total of thirty-seven (37) identified impact
elements. Eighteen (18) out of thirty-seven (37) identified impact elements were No
Appreciable Impact and Major Positive Impact. And one (1) identified as Minor
Positive Impact.

• DESIGN PROPOSAL

The researchers will propose a design for a public building where

Jeepney vehicles regularly stop for the loading and unloading of
passengers. The researchers will also provide a design for essential
facilities for the comfortability and satisfaction of the users. There
will be a part of the building, where the passengers would wait for
their turn to get on the Jeepney vehicle without getting bored
because of the entertainment provided such as free viewing, Wi-Fi
zone and etc. There will also be an area, where fast-food outlets,
tables, and chairs are located and also an area containing one or
more toilets (commonly urinals) which will be available for the public
or by the passengers. And lastly an area that will be used to store or
park Jeepney vehicles while waiting for their turn to load
passengers. The researchers will also add air-filtrating system
through modern technology to lessen carbon emission to envision
the structure’s sustainability.
