DEFECTS OF VISION AND THEIR
CORRECTION
• When the eye loses its ability to adjust its focal length, problems appear like a person cannot
see the image correctly (blurring of vision), unable to view nearby objects or far away objects.
When the defect in the refractive index occurs, the person cannot see the objects comfortably
and distinctly. If not taken timely care of, the eyes might completely lose the power of
accommodation. In this article, let us learn about various vision defects and their correction.
• There are mainly three common refractive defects of vision. They are :
1. Myopia or near-sightedness
2. Hypermetropia or far sightedness
3. Presbyopia

MYOPIA
What is Myopia?
 A person with myopia can see nearby objects clearly but cannot see distant objects distinctly.
Such a person may see clearly up to a distance of a few metres
 Myopia is also known as near-sightedness.
 A person with this defect has the far point nearer than infinity
 In a myopic eye, the image of a distant object is formed in front of the retina and not at the
retina itself.

Defects Of Myopia
 The defects of Myopia may arise due to the following reasons:
Excessive curvature of the eye lens. OR
Elongation of the eyeball.

EXPLANATION:
 When our eyes spend more time focusing on near objects, like phones, screens or even
paperbacks, it makes our eyeballs elongate, which prevents the eye from bending light the way
it should. This elongation increases nearsightedness, called myopia, which causes distant
objects to appear blurred.
Correction For a Myopic eye
• Myopia is corrected by using a concave lens of suitable focal length (power).
• So, when the ray passes through the lens before they reach the eye, the lens will diverge the
ray of light entering from infinity.
• This concave lens makes the rays of light appear to come from a far point O’ of the defective
eye.

Correction for Myopia

Questions and Answers
1. Myopia is a defect of an eye in which it:
a. cannot see near objects clearly.
b. cannot see distant objects clearly.
c. cannot see both near and distant objects clearly.
d. none of the above.
Ans: b. cannot see distant objects clearly.

2. A person suffering from an eye defect uses lenses of power -1D. Name the nature of lens
used?
Ans: The lens used is concave lens.

3. If a person's far point is 80cm in front of the eye, then what is the defect in the persons eye?
Ans: The far point of a Normal eye is infinity, since the far point of the defective eye is given
as 80cm the eye is near-sighted also know as myopia.
4. A 14 year old student is not able to see clearly the questions written on the black board at a distance of
5 m from him
a. Name the defect of vision he is suffering from.
Ans: He is suffering from Myopia or Near-sightedness.
b. Draw the diagram to show this defect.

c. What advice will a doctor give to that student?

Ans: Doctor will advise to him to wear a concave lens having suitable power for correcting the vision.
d. Name to two possible causes of this defect.
Ans: Excessive curvature of the eye lens or Elongation of the eyeball.
e. Draw the diagram to show how this defect can be correct this defect.
5. A person needs a lens of power +1.5 diopters for correcting his near vision. What is
the focal length of the lens required for correcting his near vision?
Ans: Power of lens used for correcting near vision = +1.5 D
Focal length of the required lens, f = 1/P
f = 1/1.5 = +0.667 m.
Therefore, the focal length of the lens for correcting near vision is 0.667 m.
