At the end of the lesson the

students should be able to:

1. define Statistics and its concepts

2. identify the type of variables

Statistics
Statistics
 branch of mathematics which deals
with the Collection, Organization,
Presentation, Analysis and
Interpretation of data
Why we need to
study Statistics?
Statistics is used in different fields such as:

 education

 business

 emergency preparedness
Types of Statistics
 Descriptive Statistics
 consist of methods for organizing and
summarizing data/ information
 Inferential Statistics
 consist of methods for drawing and
measuring conclusions
Examples:
 Descriptive Statistics
 An instructor ranks his students according
to their average grade.
 Inferential Statistics
 A psychologist predicts the effect of music
to a student academic performance.
Types of Variables
 Qualitative variables
 classified according to some attributes or
categories
 Quantitative variables
 classified according to numerical
characteristics
Examples:

 Qualitative Variables  Quantitative variables

 Gender  Height
 eye color  Age
 civil status  number of siblings
Types of Quantitative Variables
 Discrete variable
 variable whose values are obtained by
counting
 Continuous variable
 variable whose values are obtained by
measuring
Examples:

 Discrete Variables  Continuous variables

 number of children  temperature
 number of persons  distance
with blue eyes  area
 number of males and
females in class A
Try this: Classify the following data whether they
are qualitative or quantitative variables.
> height > religion > weight > gender
> color > age > name > gender

if it is quantitative identify if it is discrete or continuous.
1. colors of the automobiles on a used car lot
2. number of seats in a movie theatre
3. length of hair of female students
4. Mae’s height
