The Invention Of Light Bulbs
• The first light bulb was invented by Thomas Alva Edison, In 1879.
• In 1878, Thomas Edison began serious research into developing a practical
incandescent lamp and on October 14, 1878, Edison filed his first patent
application for "Improvement In Electric Lights".
• By January 1879, at his laboratory in Menlo Park, New Jersey, Edison had built his
first high resistance, incandescent electric light. It worked by passing electricity
through a thin platinum filament in the glass vacuum bulb, which delayed the
filament from melting. Still, the lamp only burned for a few short hours.
Types of Bulbs Used Today.
• There are four popular types of lightbulbs: incandescent, compact
fluorescent (CFL), halogen, and light-emitting diode (LED).
• The Bulbs Used today are:-
• LED (Light Emitting Diode)
• HID (High-Intensity Discharge)
• CFL (Compact Fluorescent)
• Smart Bulbs
Evolution of Bulbs Till Now.

• 1.Arc lamps- The first artificial light source-

• The arc lamp worked around the idea of generating an electrical spark
through the air between two carbon rods. The gap between the rods must
be of the right size to produce maximum light. If the gap is too large, the
spark will flicker for a moment and then go out and if it is too small then
the light produced would not be much.
Evolution of Bulbs Till Now
• 2. Halogen light bulbs- Improving the filament
• Unlike the regular incandescent light bulb used earlier, a halogen (such as
iodine or bromine) is used in the bulb.
• A huge advantage of using halogens instead of inert gas is that when
tungsten glows, it forms a residue which is wasted in an inert gas. Using
halogens helps as the tungsten is redeposited to the filament after it cools
down. This increases the life of the filament as it does not break down.
Evolution of Bulb Till Now
• CFLs – The Compact Florescent Lights-
• The Compact Florescent Lights, commonly known as CFLs, offer a
considerable increase in the illumination as compared to Halogens Light bulbs
and Incandescent Light Bulbs. Also, it takes 25% less energy.
• It was the oil crisis of 1973 that forced the scientists to develop a lighting
solution that consumes less energy. In 1976, Edward Hammer found a way to
bend the florescent tubes which created the first CFL.
Evolution of Bulbs Till Now
• Light Emitting Diodes- The future is here
• Basically, LEDs are tiny bulbs that emit light in a single direction. Many tiny bulbs
are fit together in a LED bulb to emit light.
• LEDs don’t have a filament that gets hot and breaks after a certain amount of time;
instead, they are illuminated by the movement of semiconductor electrons.
Semiconductors are a gem of the periodic table. They work as an insulator in the
normal state but when they get excited, they work as a conductor.
Information About CFL
(Compact Fluorescent) Bulbs
• In a CFL, an electric current is driven through a tube containing argon
and a small amount of mercury vapor.
• This generates invisible ultraviolet light that excites a fluorescent coating
(called phosphor) on the inside of the tube, which then emits visible light.
Information about LED
(Light-emitting diode) Bulbs
• An LED lamp or LED light bulb is an electric light that produces light
using light-emitting diodes (LEDs).
•  Light output decreases gradually over the lifetime of the LED. Some LED
lamps are drop-in replacements for incandescent or fluorescent lamps.
